DIY 300B Redux

Do It Yourself
Test tubes are Genalex "Gold Lion" 300B
Next best is the J&J 2A3-40 (which is a 300B with 2.5V filaments)
Favorite is the EML 300B mesh-plates with 2.5V filaments

I have an unheard pair of J&J 300B to try.

I'm thinking for ordering some parts for a final build. I think I'd like a boutique coupling cap unless that seems like a bad idea. Mundorf silver/oil comes in 1000V so that would certainly fit the bill. Quite a few Clarity caps come in 800V as well as a few others including pricy Solen Teflon caps. Miflex has a 630V cap that should fit as well. Any suggestions?

Also, what about the bypass caps? Currently I am using a DC Link 4.7uf for the #41 and a cheap 'N cheerful 220uf Panasonic electrolytic. Are there reasons to either stick with those or find something a little more boutique like something from the Clarity range?

Finnaly, will 240KΩ suffice instead of the specified 249K resistors as grid-leak resistors?

The 300B cathode bypass cap is very much in the signal path. I tend to like the boxy DC link caps you can get from Mouser for this application. Using something similar for the driver screen bypass seems reasonable to me.

240K is certainly close enough to 249K to work appropriately.

The cathode bypass cap creates a bit of a shelving filter in the low bass that can creep up and become audible if the cap isn't large enough.

I get frustrated with boutique caps. I like V-Cap CuTFs but one dead-shorted and sent 150VDC to the input of one my Williamson monoblocks. Good thing tubes are tough! Others I just find too colored, or too fragile (broken leads), or just "off" for my tastes. Lately I've avoided them and stuck with my trusty Cornell-Dubilier 942Cs. But a couple of months ago a friend sent me some Audyn Coppers to try in my Aikido preamp. I quite fell in love with them. Transparent but rich and dense, wonderful midrange, plenty of air around the instruments but not "airy" in a fake way. I ordered a pair for myself. Just my .02. ;-)

I’m anxious to see this project move off the breadboard and into a final build.

Once upon a time a was going to build a pair of 300b mono blocks, but got cold feet. Still have a lot of the parts but hadn’t ever quite landed on a design. This one looks very interesting!

Cool, is it tome to put to put in its final form?
