The Crack 1.1 arrived today. This is a kit for a OTL headphone amp. It's designed for 200Ω impedance phones and up. Came well packed. Nice looking kit!

I'm going to build it stock, no modifications. I do want to powercoat the top plate and transformer end bell. I'm not sure what colors to use. I like the way @marantzfan did his 2A3. Thoughts on colors?

You're building a crack now Mark? That should be a quick and easy one considering your skill set. :)

As for colors.... I always like the Bottlehead Special Edition series they did briefly that had a dark top plate, walnut wood base, copper painted end bells and cream colored chicken head knobs. Like this:

That does look classy! I'll have to check with my powercoater on colors he has in stock.
Now that would be different! :)

I was going to suggest a Porsche Guards Red / Ferrari 'Ticket Me' red for the top plate, with flat grey for the bell-end, and Steinway black for the base.

That Red and Black would match my avatar. :)

The black top plate is gonna show the dust.... are you thinking of staining the alder wood ?

And I wouldn't be able to wait for any of that fancy stuff. Sound first and foremost before cosmetics. I would have that up and running before breakfast.

That's a good thought! I didn't consider that. Yeah, I'll stain the base.
I waited 5 weeks for the kit. I guess a little longer wait won't hurt. :)

Also an awesome BÖC song (and cover by Minutemen).

i built a bottlehead smash preamp. one thing i regret is that i didn't upgrade the pots. i bet you could sneak in a stepped attenuator or even an alps pot and it would be a nice improvement.

thanks, marantzfan. however, i don't like the smash enough to put more $ in it. i have pretty much gone TVC/LDR/passive. the smash has too much gain for any of my systems and the tubes go microphonic if you have much vibration (you have to isolate it like a turntable).

I've thought about the attenuator. That's one area that a upgrade would be a good idea. I wouldn't want a stepped one though.
Top plate and bell are at powercoater. Secret colors. :)

Top secret, or do Haven members have the necessary security clearance/credentials?

It will be different. :) It's a color I've always liked but, haven't seen used much. I'm working on the wood base this week. I'm staining it very dark, I hope.
