Wouldn't the Elacs currently being discussed make excellent speakers for a good "Doorway" system?
I think any of the Andrew Jones ELAC speakers would, not just the Uni-Fi line but the B6s, etc. Also, they're not limited to the entry level Doorway. I think they're also a good doorway out of '1970s box speaker collecting camp'.
I've had my finger on the trigger for a while now. The B6 has a 6.5 driver. I'm wondering if the bass would be better than the UB5 and or/if it lacks the SQ of the UB5?
I've not heard them back to back. In fact, I listened to them over a year apart. My somewhat vague guess is that yes, the B6 will be a fuller/thicker sound, the UB5 more detailed with better imaging, and a bit more transparent. Again, this is two unrelated memories being compared years apart from each other. I last heard the B6 in 2014 I think. I last heard the UB5s last night.
Do we need a monkey coffin forum?
Absolutely, but how cool is it to have a speaker that goes for $500/pair that sounds this good?
Now we just need to find a budget amp with similar "bang for the buck".
Scroll down, you'll find it listed here as "Speakers".
I haven't heard all of these (yet) but there's the PS Audio Sprout, NAD C326BEE, Yamaha AS-501, Marantz PM-5005, Onkyo A-9010, and for a little more the Rega Brio 2017 that seems really nice and I would think all of these would mate well with the not-that-picky Elacs.
Always liked the Yamaha integrated amps.
Any of the amps on your list should work nicely.
Something like the U-Turn table for analog.
Chromebook (or existing laptop) into an external DAC (Schiit, Meridian, iFi - something in the $150 - $300 range) plus a Tidal subscription.
For ~$2,000 (+/-), you could assemble a darn fine Doorway System.
Yes, several of them have built in phono preamps so you'd be good there. The Schiit Mani looks like a well reviewed option if not. Or the super cheap ART phono stage that was getting talked about a few years back.
I'll add the Outlaw RR2160. Has everything in one unit. I'm thinking about one for BR, tv/audio. This and Elac's. http://www.outlawaudio.com/products/rr2160.html
Looks pretty interesting and simplifies adding content.
I totally forgot about that one, and was even mentioning it to somebody last week. It has a built in DAC w/USB input as well, I think.
It was in Stereophile Dec. issue. Has built in Dac/usb and more. I don't really like the faceplate( looks like its from the movie Metropolis) but, I could live with it.
Here's the specs on the B6/UB5. B6 6ohm, UB5 4ohm.
