So Don't I Get the Greatest SS Receiver of All Time!

I would have never guessed.I only had one HK out of countless vintage receivers.A HK model twenty nine ( circa 1968).Just a short time before the transformer went.So I really don't know the signature sound if there is one.Sure is pretty.

I've heard of the Citation receiver, but never heard much about it other than that they are very rare.

The more I read about this guy, the more interested I become.

We need to see some pictures of YOUR Citation though Erik. :)

Digging this one. There is one of these for sale here locally for $700. I'm quite curious about it, but not sure I'm that curious.

What do you guys think?

It's a great price.
And it's about as good sounding a 1970's SS receiver as you will find. Some might consider that damning with faint praise....

It is undeniably cool and lovely to look at though. A wonderful objet d'art.

That's a great price for it. Sonically I think its worth about that or a bit more. Collectors/looks value is much higher, though. Its super cool.

Well it’s pretty much the only worthwhile receiver. There I said it.

And even then you can beat it easily with something simpler and newer.

I think a few Sansui fans (5000x, 8080db) might argue with you. My favorite was the Luxman LX-1050 that the nice man who broke into our apartment took with him. (Saved me some future Marie Kondo triaging on that one I can assure you.)
My father had the monster Pioneer SX 1980 which sounded purty and clear and had enough umph to power a small village.

I recently sold my 5000x that I've had for years, and I did like how my Sansui 9090db sounded. I've had dozens of receivers, collecting them was how I got into this hobby, at least in a more obsessed way. I think the 9090db might have sounded better than the Citation but the Citation looks better, and neither of them, to my ears, really sounded good compared to what you can find out there now. Another receiver I liked, of the bunch, was a Sony STR-6800SD. I wish I'd kept my MAC-4100 instead of my MAC-1900 (which I still have), but again, really because it looked cool. It didn't sound bad but wasn't anything special.

I had both the Citation and the SX-1980. The Citation takes that battle easily.

I had that 1280 but think it wasn't in the best of help. In fact, I hope it wasn't for what it sounded like. I agree with the popular belief that the SX-1250 was better sounding, but I didn't love them either.

To this day I can't figure out why it took me owning dozens of the things to figure out that I didn't really like any of them all that much, at least sonically. You'd think somewhere in there I would have branched out earlier.

I had the SX-1980 and the SX-1250 at the same time. The 1250 was dramatically better. Both had been gone through by the same tech.

I still love the theory of the receiver. This cool looking thing with all the buttons and a tuner built in. The Citation was something I wanted to just, you know, complete the mission. I love the electrostatic buttons on top. Its a really cool thing. Yeah I wish it sounded better but I wish they ALL sounded better, because they're cooler looking and more funky to use than my separates.

I’m a fan of vintage Kenwood amps, love the Ka8004, still have it and use it frequently but NOT their receivers, for some reason. My brother had the KR-9600 (so SHINY) and loved it but I thought it was sterile sounding. I really, really wanted to like Macintosh gear because of the look and because I’m supposed to but didn’t and don’t. Still have it though.

I still have the anemic Pioneer SX727 sitting unused on a closet shelf.

The only boat anchor in the bunch was the time wasting, evil, vile and pernicious Nakamichi SR-4. God, I hated that receiver, unreliable and shamelessly fugly. If I stll had it I’d unbox it just to give it such a slap.

A few years ago I was all in a lather to get a Fischer 400 which I really liked but then got distracted and tried to convince my wife that what we really needed was a HH Scott 399 (so GLOWY!) but then the fever broke.

I think I'd make an exception for the Scott 399, and let another receiver in. I almost bought one once, but got the Fisher X202 that was sitting beside it, based on the recommendation from a dude at the 'other' site who liked Fisher tube stuff. Ever since I've been kicking myself for not going with my own instinct. The Fisher is fine, and its been reliable. It just doesn't sound all that special at all.

@JohnVF I picked up a Sony STR-4800SD this week and will be cleaning it up and listening this weekend. Am excited to hear good words about the more powerful version, hope to be surprised by this one.

I’ve only heard the 6800sd, I’m curious to know how the little brother holds up. The bigger one (and there’s one above the more common 6800sd) sounds really nice.
