I recently sold my EWA LS-25 speaker cables to raise some cash. I’m trying a few things as a replacement that might have a few of the sonic characteristics of the LS25s. So far a pair of Kimber Kable 4PR were a fail, accurate but somewhat lifeless. Some of the upper range details, small but so important to realism, seemed missing. Surely for different loudspeakers, a different story.
I bought a really inexpensive 50’ reel of Crutchfiel’s flat speaker cable, 16 guage. Better actually. Looking at the capacitance of Kimber, it’s higher than your average wire, but lower inductance. From what I’m reading, higher capacitance can lead to a small roll-off at higher frequencies. But I’ve also read it would be well outside the audible bandwidth. Just putting out a personal experience. The flat Crutchfield wire sounds better.
Other “flat” wires I’ve had great experiences with, Naim NACA5, TQ and EWA (both invented by @ColinWonfor) and Alpha Core Goertz MI2 Veracity. I can’t explain that last one since they were very high capacitance cables but very flat, sandwiched on top of each other. Tara Labs, not flat, RSC rectangular solid core was very, very good.
Some here are fans of Duelund 12g tinned copper speaker wire. I had great success in DIY interconnects with Duelund but the 12g speaker cables are too much $, could have kept the LS25’s. But looking for alternatives, I ran across Belden 9497 16g tinned copper wire with quite a following both as speaker cables and for crossover connections. Given the good luck with Duelund tinned copper, has anyone tried the Belden 9497 as speaker cable? I have always been sensitive to differences in speaker cables, interconnects and digital not-so-much.
Mine are being delivered tomorrow. Twisted pair, 16 gauge, tinned-copper.
Feedback and comments welcome. Ridicule accepted but not preferred
