Speaker Cables, Trying a Few Things

I recently sold my EWA LS-25 speaker cables to raise some cash. I’m trying a few things as a replacement that might have a few of the sonic characteristics of the LS25s. So far a pair of Kimber Kable 4PR were a fail, accurate but somewhat lifeless. Some of the upper range details, small but so important to realism, seemed missing. Surely for different loudspeakers, a different story.

I bought a really inexpensive 50’ reel of Crutchfiel’s flat speaker cable, 16 guage. Better actually. Looking at the capacitance of Kimber, it’s higher than your average wire, but lower inductance. From what I’m reading, higher capacitance can lead to a small roll-off at higher frequencies. But I’ve also read it would be well outside the audible bandwidth. Just putting out a personal experience. The flat Crutchfield wire sounds better.

Other “flat” wires I’ve had great experiences with, Naim NACA5, TQ and EWA (both invented by @ColinWonfor) and Alpha Core Goertz MI2 Veracity. I can’t explain that last one since they were very high capacitance cables but very flat, sandwiched on top of each other. Tara Labs, not flat, RSC rectangular solid core was very, very good.

Some here are fans of Duelund 12g tinned copper speaker wire. I had great success in DIY interconnects with Duelund but the 12g speaker cables are too much $, could have kept the LS25’s. But looking for alternatives, I ran across Belden 9497 16g tinned copper wire with quite a following both as speaker cables and for crossover connections. Given the good luck with Duelund tinned copper, has anyone tried the Belden 9497 as speaker cable? I have always been sensitive to differences in speaker cables, interconnects and digital not-so-much.

Mine are being delivered tomorrow. Twisted pair, 16 gauge, tinned-copper.

Feedback and comments welcome. Ridicule accepted but not preferred ;)

I have the Belden 9497 in use currently. I’ve never used any boutique speaker cables, so I can’t compare them in that respect, but I’ve found them to be revealing enough to detect differences in other cables but not fatiguing or overly bright. I run a 2 way Altec woofer and horn crossed over at 500hz. I liked solid copper slightly better on the horns, but the 9497 is great on the woofers.

This is what I am hoping for. Thanks!

I've used and like the Duelund (expensive), Western Electric WE16GA (hard to find), Belden 9497 and Woods Yardmaster extension cord (discontinued?).

Love the Duelund, so if the others are similar, I’ll be very happy.

FYI - I can't speak highly enough (from a purely electro-mechanical perspective) about the Blue Jeans cable speaker cables (Belden 5000-series wire + ultrasonically-welded connectors). They are extremely well constructed and very reasonable.

I'm using the same stuff from my outboard crossover to the dual Altec woofers in my Heathkit cabinets. Never tried anything else in place of them. Horns wired with Kimber TCSS I think. Twisted loosely.

Intial impressions are winners. Very, very nice. Listening to Charlie Haden and Keith Jarrett, Jasmine. At a very low volume the balance is still full and balanced with an appropriate bite from the piano.

i think these are keepers. More detail than Audioquest Type 4 twisted solid core but doesn’t quite reach the level of the rectangular solid core Tara Labs wire. Crazy less expensive than the Tara Labs.

@MikeT. So you are using a new set of Belden 9497 16g tinned copper wire, from where?

@Olson_jr I bought them from Vince325 on eBay. They shipped from Anaheim Priority Mail and arrived quickly. I think he has a couple of different ads but mine were a 10foot pair.

@Olson_jr I remembered the sound signature of the Deulund tinned copper in the DIY and stumbled across this link for tinned copper Belden.

Belden 9497 has been en vogue in the Asian audiophile community for some years now, but the problem until recently was that nobody was selling the stuff by the foot, and few people were willing to shell out $600+ for a full spool of it.

Since then, a couple of eBay sellers have started offering it in "speaker cable" lengths and I agree with @MikeT. -- the stuff's a great value!

FWIW, I have purchased a number of times from the ebay seller highendaudioauctions, who currently has a number of 9497 listings. No affiliation, but positive feedback from me so far!

EDIT: funny, it appears this guy may be selling the same goods under a couple of different ebay seller names. :)

I’ve been using the Belden in my Altec builds to much success.

I use and like the Belden for internal speaker use on the woofer. Tweeter duties is copper stranded 18awg Netotech.

Actual speaker wire is Supra 4.0 11AWG runs.

I'm about to try the Cardas 11.5 litz for internal speaker hook up. I'm predicting a bit more detail and air... hopefully not too much air but will see.

Never liked Dueland anything.

Thanks for the tip @MikeT. I've used Belden cable before, but not this specific one.

Ordered a set of 10' cables from the fella on eBay linked above to press into use in my home office system. Considering the amount of listening its been getting, it was due for an upgrade.

So, just popped these in between the Marantz 2230 and Tannoy Lomond's.

Ahh, much better than what I had in there before. Will give it some time to see how a little time on them changes things, but for $25 this is crazy good wire!

I grabbed some 9497 to mess around with. Punches well above it's price point. 👍
