The Covid-19 thread.

I think we can presume that the infection rate is a whole lot higher than the stats would have us believe. Of course there is a push from the top to reduce testing because it makes then stats look bad - possibly the most imbecilic nothing I've heard yet.
Well, the states are largely controlling their own testing and the US is doing more testing than a lot of if not most places. Trump is a lot of talk but the United States largely runs autonomously through the states and they mostly do what they want/can. If I want a test here in IL I can get one for free and its pretty easy...the antibody tests are different and cost money.

Some study, though, revealed, that not everybody infected had antibodies after a few months... though its assumed they'd have immunity like with other similar viruses. So if that's true we may never know the actual infection rate.

Compared to most of the "1st world" US testing rates are pretty low to begin with, actually. No matter how you cut it we'll never know absolutely how many have been infected, but if enough data is generated that a reasonable estimate can be made it will be good enough. My personal opinion is that antibody tests should be free and perhaps even mandatory. That would really generate useful statistics if the tests are reliable.

Well, AZ now has mandatory face coverings ordinance while in public (mouth and nose). It only took a large spike in cases to make this happen. 🤦‍♂️

While IL is trending downward I don't think it'll last. Everybody including myself has let their guard down a bit too much. Over the weekend we went to Nordstrom Rack, The Container Store, got ice cream, went to a wine place, test drove an old car (which smelled like pee), went to Lowes, went to Michael's, went to Barnes & Noble, went to Best Buy (which had been looted weeks ago and still had very little). went to the magazine shop, hung out with friends one of whom is a flight attendant in their home....its depressing how such normal things now seem like such a breech of "normal" behavior, at least around here. Everybody had taken the lockdown very seriously here and we were very much shut down, nothing open until about 2 weeks ago.

Even though the scientists, research doctors and epidemiologists CONTINUE to warn that were not even through with Wave 1, and that we will certainly have Wave 2 and possibly Wave 3 to follow, too many are treating this like it’s over. And of course it’s not. And now young people are becoming infected and hospitalized in record numbers.

And Trump hasn’t spoken to Fauci in three weeks.

SANOFI, one of the leading vaccine manufacturers, is the company many are betting on to be the first to develop a safe COVID vaccine. Paul Hudson, Chief Executive Officer, was on Squawkbox this morning and explained they MAY be ready to go into ‘trials’ by the end of this year with a safe vaccine possibly produced by Spring of 2021. But they won’t be ramped up for production until the end of 2021.

I watched a woman in GA explain how COVID is a hoax and why she refuses to social distance and mask wear because “we like being huggy and kissy people”. I wonder how she’ll like being ‘deady’.

I think by far one of the saddest displays of 'patriotism' I've ever seen is this dumbass refusal to just wear a damned mask when you're in public. Like its some breach of people's 'freedom". Like anybody actually wants to wear these things or are wearing them because they're so wonderful and comfortable in this heat. I can't believe the selfishness of people. Or, I can, by seeing who our dear leader is, but I can't believe that so many are so quick to jump on the bandwagon like its some big show of their rights. It's pathetic. If people would just wear their masks, distance a bit, act like respectful human beings when they're out we could get through this faster and be back to some sort of normality. At least when I was out over the weekend, most everybody here was wearing a mask. Its not the same elsewhere.

I don't know if this has appeared in the news other than locally, but it's worth mentioning. Many will know that our main border with the US is closed for non-essential travel, and vice versa. There is however, Alaska. People will be able to travel from the lower 48 to Alaska if necessary.

In the last week or so seven $1200 tickets were issued to travelers that decided to stop in Banff National Park and go hiking. Wrong choice.

That's not Covid, that's just our greatness overflowing.

The number of tinfoil-hat people I've encountered who seriously believe that the whole mask-wearing-social-distancing thing is a plot for world domination by some Antifa/Soros/Illuminati cabal astounds me. Windsor-Essex is going to masks being mandatory in shops starting later this week and the squawking and excuses why a person can't wear a mask are incredible. If you're around people wear the damned thing, take it off when you're not.

And for anybody thinking "oh they're getting political"... mask wearing isn't political. I can't help that somebody is attempting to make it political. It's basic, get along in society don't be a selfish person because we're all in this together so just do it. And its basic science... its working everywhere else, there's no magical "americans aren't helped by masks"...its a big reason how china got it under control. How taiwan has few cases. How pretty much everybody else has a lower rate of death and infection than the United States. I just heard we're probably banned from the EU for the foreseeable future. Great. #*)#(*@)#(*)#@(* morons just prolonging this BS.

You're durned right mask wearing isn't political in spite of the cabal who want to make it that way. Some people just don't get that covid is a virus and without the appropriate host it disintegrates in fairly short order. Deny it a host and it will cease to be a problem. It doesn't have to take for frickin' ever, just be diligent instead of selfish.

It's also not just one side, there's also just a general level of selfish stupidity going on here that i just don't get. A friend of mine was just in Brooklyn and said a whole bunch of people were just rambling around no masks, with huge gatherings of people.... how long do they want this to go on?

It's really made me ashamed of this country to see basically every other country on Earth just suck it up and try to deal with this, despite it requiring people to be inconvenienced by it... and succeeding. While here, despite all the evidence of it working everywhere else... a huge portion of the population just thinks that they're special and don't have to do anything they don't want to do, while the infection rate goes up YET AGAIN, undoing the whole reason for the shut down, and just la la la me me me. It's reinforcing every bad stereotype about this place.

Short-term pain for long-term gain. How hard is it, really?

I read that immunity for people who had very mild or asymptomatic cases was only a few months. For people with severe cases it was more, but the length didn't seem reported, not lifelong though. Either way it bodes very poorly for our collective future. Imagine if every time you caught a cold it put you on a ventilator for a month or killed you.

These are very scary times we are living in. I hope they are able to come up with a vaccine. But if COVID mutates like the flu, is as common as a cold and contagious like the measles we are in polite words... Fucked.

Well, when you get the leader of the country saying masks are for wusses...

I agree. We have to bunker down and take it. COVID will destroy conspiracy theories one way or the other in time.

Last point for now... This is what the Waves of the Spanish flu looked like...

Clearly the worst is literally to happen. To reach herd immunity is something like 70%.

There's videos out 'n about of a recent hearing in Palm Beach County, Florida, where residents were able to make their voices heard regarding a vote on public mask requirements. It ain't pretty, and I'll leave it up to folks to look it up if they haven't seen it already. What can I say, other than quote "better to keep ones mouth closed and be thought a fool; rather than open it and remove all doubt."

Also in the news today was a report of a (small) study which indicated that antibodies produced from a Covid infection start dwindling after a few months. It was acknowledged as a very small study and not conclusive. So much more testing and studies to come.
