JBL L-82 Classics or my speaker eyes are bigger than my car stomach

Basically because they’re too big. I have to keep reminding myself that at some point, we move, the Harbeth system comes back, and these are a second system then, probably in my office room with all my books, guitars, etc.
They'll be too big for a couple of days. Then you just get used to them. And who knows, they might relegate the Harbeths to second string status.

Congrat’s on the purchase, JBL will always have a sweet spot in my heart. Don’t think I’ll part with my 4410’s anytime soon.
Probably less exciting but any pics with the grills off?

Sorry, got caught up in work. Reminds me, I like them enough to take the plastic covering off the "L82 Classic" part by the treble pot.

I'm a big fan of front-ports. They work so much better in my rooms. The treble pots are very subtle, its not a huge shift up and down, just fine-tuning of the sound. So far they sound just right, right in the middle.

Thanks for posting. I really like the white woofer cone, pays homage to the classics (and hence the name). How do they sound with/without the grills?

What are you using for stands John?
Like the blue grill choice, my stands are here mostly for cosmetics and getting the speakers up to a listenable height. They're Bose 901 tulip stands. Were this solely a sound-quality exercise I would use something else, though I may purchase the factory stands at some point. I like that they're a bit lower yet point the speakers up towards the listener.

I've yet to get to that.. mostly because the grille-fit is a bit tight so they're not all that easy to take on and off, so I've just left them on as that's how they'll be listened to here.

These really do sound great. They're lively, fun, and have me listening to music all the time. Again, their are a few 'audiophile' things they don't excel at but I haven't been listening to them that way... glued to a chair between them. I've so much less free time than I used to, that I have to squeeze in listening time while other things are happening. For that, they've been exceptional... and they do routinely capture my attention to the point of stopping whatever it is I'm doing, to just take in the music.

I like them.
They’re just not the sturdiest things. I’m think they look great, though. I’m thinking through some ways to add mass to them, and making it so I can level them on my floors.

JohnVF can you share with us some of the music that you have been listening to with the L82 speakers?

Thanks for sharing your list of music artists. :)

Ask me next week and it’ll be totally different :). I go through moods.

Maybe some Pink Floyd or Moody Blues depending on your mood.

I hope you have the time to give a detailed comparison of the JBL L82 Classics to your Harbeth speakers.

I am eager to read your comparison with some of your favorite songs.
This is one of the reasons why I asked you about the music you listen to.

I have the intention, when time permits, to actually write up a more formal review of them... I'm just doing it a bit differently this time. Instead of immediately sitting down and obsessing over them, I'm living with them for awhile and letting them soak in. I also want to give them more of what they need, as I've kind of just thrown them on wobbly stands and roughly placed them where they look good.

While I don't have the Harbeths here to make a direct comparison (storage unit is 1/2 mile away) I can say that I prefer the bass in the JBLs while the Harbeths sound a bit more... organic? Natural? Not that these sound overly analytical but the Harbeths and their thin-wall cabinets have this way of just sounding like real instruments in the room. These speakers sound more like what things are... very good recordings of instruments in the room. More like studio monitors in sound, while still being what I'd call "musical". They really have a way with rhythm and the bass that holds a song together. And they're quite fun.

Also, I'm sure Pink Floyd will make an appearance at some point. Maybe my SACD of Wish You Were Here if I can find it, as I've been on an SACD kick lately with my EMM Labs player finally being healthy for the first time in almost a decade. The combination of that player as a source, the Luxman integrated, and the JBLs, is really something.
