The 'Autumn Leaves' Thread

Stumbled across Ahmad Jamal's (then 87) wonderful latin style performance of a true jazz standard - Autumn Leaves. Just had to share it and didn't find a thread where it would really fit in, so created a new one. Curious to see your finds of Autumn Leaves covers.

I've always considered the difinitive version is that of Cannonball Adderley/Miles Davis from the "Somethin' Else," album.
I bought that record in 1961, in Harrod's record department in Knightsbridge. It was an import and has the two licence stickers on the back of the cover.
I still have it, but have since bought the CD.

A few years ago I saw him perform that tune at the Detroit Jazz Festival late one evening. It was one of the most memorable performances I've witnessed! The percussionist was awesome as well.

Reminds me of the only time I saw Ray Brown perform on stage, accompanied by just two youngsters (piano and drums) much less than half his age. It was a wonderful concert, not only seeing and hearing Ray Brown playing his bass, but also witnessing how he promoted his young sidemen to reach out and go for whatever they were able to give. An amazing talent as a bandleader and a mentor.

Let us not forget Iggy's take on Les Feuilles Mortes.

Wow, this is really different! I totally love the fact that he tried the original French lyrics instead of Johnny Mercer's famous translation, and his accent in a way adds to the charm of his interpretation. Yet the rhythm section lacks the grade of variability that I would expect for a classic jazz standard, to me it comes a bit mechanical, almost robotic. The sax solo, though, can make up for that to some extent.

All in all an interesting approach. Thanks for this!

The "world and his wife" have recorded Autumn Leaves for decades.

Here's a more contemporary jazz version.

I was impressed with her singing when I first came across this, nine years ago.

Here singing live in a record shop in "East Cupcake" or wherever, (actually Junction City Oregon) for a local morning TV show, before later appearing at a concert.

Turning a melancholic tune even more melancholic. Great voice, I consider buying that album.

You won't be disappointed, she's not done too bad for a girl from Sitka Alaska.

It always amused me that Sitka is also where much of the Sanda Bullock movie "The Proposal" was filmed.
