Love that Daytona, PM.
Years ago a friend had a Daytona coupe (serial # 13) that I was very familiar with. I once drove it with him from my previous home in Glenview, IL to Elkhart Lake WI, for a Historic Race weekend. I was too scared to drive it on the track though as it's value at the time far exceeded that of my house. In retrospect, the drive up there was probably far more dangerous on a Saturday morning through all the small town traffic than "touring" on the track. Later that day we did got to "dice it up" (touring style) with Phil Hill riding in the lead car, the latest greatest model. Although we arrived late to the grid before getting on the track We were waved in right behind him at #2 in the queue in a Ferrari-only feature display for 10 or so laps.
After about 5 laps we switched cars with another friend. He had a Testarosa which was far more civilized and had much better brakes than the Daytona which was referred to by it's owner as a "sports truck" due to it's "vintage" components, particularly the brakes. But the "ripping canvas" noise and abundant cam noise from it's V12 was something I'll never forget.
But I digress and I hope this doesn't sound like I'm boasting but I think about that once in a lifetime experience every time I see a Daytona.
