What it's been like in my neighborhood

We had our traditional "January thaw" late last week.
From a foot or so of snow on the ground and overnight lows ca. -20 degrees F to heavy rain and a high near 60 degrees F in the space of two days late last week.

One of the (ahem) knock-on effects of such weather is the break-up of stream and river ice, which then piles up and forms ice jams... with predictable results.

Route 12A along the Connecticut River was closed for a day or so, and at least one poor person had to be rescued from water (and poor judgement) Saturday :(

Today we have this interesting hoarfrost/ice crystal stuff atop the now hard-frozen meltwater runoff from last week's thaw.

This piqued my interest, having lived not terribly far from the Cornwall bridge in CT many years ago. So I looked it up. It seems there oughta be another asterisk after "longest covered bridge", with the Cornish-Windsor bridge you cite still being the longest wooden covered bridge in the States.

Weather 'round these parts has been quite unremarkable. 45° F and rainy the other day, 50ish and beautifully sunny here today. Whole different story 50 miles East in the mountains, though...

edit: spelling error

Yes, wooden. They make covered bridges outta something else? ;)

Actually, my recollection was that the span(s) of the Windsor bridge were the longest -- which is actually why I googled. So I dunno... but I did disclaim my comment appropriately, I think (my rigorous academic training showing). ;)
