    DIY AD797 Phono Stage

I am using the Burson V5i's in the second stage, there is a newer one that's the V6 which is supposed (according to Burson and a few reviews I have read) even better. https://www.head-fi.org/showcase/burson-audio-supreme-sound-opamp-v6-vivid.22718/reviews Stick with the AD797BRZ on adapters...

    DIY AD797 Phono Stage

As already mentioned the OPA134 is the single circuit version of the old faithful OPA2134, the OPA134 will work but wouldn't be near the top of my list, too laid back an too narrow soundstage for me, the OPA1611AIDR which are cheap but need to be mounted on a SMD to DIP 8 Adapter would probably...

    DIY AD797 Phono Stage

I recently tried the Burson Audio V5i op amps in place of the LME49990's, to my old ears they were a step up, smoother sound, more separation/detail etc. Didn't work well in place of the AD797's though. No Affiliation.

Reality check - should I keep the unrestored dinosaur amplifier?

Not to go off topic but I bought a Yamaha M70 a while back and it would trip the circuit breaker at switch on, talked to the seller and he said it's the X-Power supply they put in them (it had the Yamaha recommended PSU cap replacement), the new Arc Fault circuit breakers are not compatible with...

    Restraint -- or Stupidity?

A-1 and T-1 combo, that's a give away price where I live, fine units, some of Yamaha's best, snap them up if you still can.

I admit it. I like MM.

I heard the Pickering XSV3000 which is the same as the 881 by all accounts and wanted to buy it there and then it sounded so sweet, then MC carts came out and everyone (including myself) jumped on that band wagon. Would love to get hold of a 881S or XSV3000 now and give them a listen, I like to...

Musical Paradise MP-P2 MM/MC Phono Stage

I see what looks like an OpAmp in the pictures, because they make Jfet OpAmps and discreet Jfet's are actual transistors either surface mount or through hole, so maybe a Jfet Module is an OpAmp? But then they mention "transistors", would have to see the unit close up or a schematic to know for...

Musical Paradise MP-P2 MM/MC Phono Stage

It uses tubes for the MM section and JFET's for the MC step up, they list gain as a maximum of 100db which is way more than most MC phono stages. "Jfet module is employed for the MC to MM step-up section. This module is user changable to support other JFET transistors."

I've had it with audiophile junk.

Too true, there are many around who still believe price equates to performance, of course in many cases it does, but it's not across the board.

No fuss, just listen. The Technics SL-10.

I had a Technics SL-7 for a while, a great little table, fitted a Grado Blue to it and it really sang, bought it for $75.00 and all it needed was a clean, re-grease and a new drive belt. Wish I'd kept it as it was so easy to use and sounded much better than it should have, I got into MC carts...

Yep take JBL, KEF, Wharfedale etc, sure they still turn out some fine high end gear but also put the badge on cheap Chinese manufactured stuff that you can buy in big box stores, people see the name and think it must be good. It sure can, take those Sony SS-M7's I lust after, magnificent...

I adopted another orphan turntable today.

Fantastic find, I used to go to a small HiFi Boutique where the door was locked and he would only let you in once he saw who you were, he had the same YP-D8 fitted with a "new" (they had just been released) Denon DL-103S. He had it connected via the Denon SUT to a HK Citation and driving some...

I've had it with audiophile junk.

Couldn't agree more, how many people waste money on something because of price alone? They pay a lot for the "badge" and even convince themselves it sounds better because it cost more and conversely convince themselves something can't sound good because it's cheaper. I remember when Rolls Royce...

    DIY AD797 Phono Stage

When I first made PCB's for the AD797 they only worked with batteries and would have a hiss in the left channel if used with a PSU not to mention I left a trace out and we had to bridge them with component legs. I have learned a lot about PCB design since then.

    DIY AD797 Phono Stage

Thanks for the positive reviews guys. And many thanks to Sachin for his great PCB's and distribution. It's funny that when I started this project it was supposed to be just a basic, easy to build MC phono stage, it's exceeded all my expectations.
