Super Cool Altec JBL Find

Saw an ad for some 511B but realized the sale was actually for complete speakers. A few emails and a phone conversation later (as well as some manual labor to load and unload)....these are now home.

The story goes that the owner was an engineer from Princeton who wanted a pair of speakers in the 80’s. He worked on the space shuttle and decided to buy and read the loudspeaker cookbook (or how to design loudspeakers book). The cabinets are made from teak wood plywood with mahogany corners. The pictures do not do them any justice....simply gorgeous!

The components are 807-8a symbiotic mated to 511 horns, JBL 2235H woofers and Altec N500E crossovers. The woofers have deteriorated foam.

Getting together a game plan but I’m in love with these cabinets.IMG_2842.JPGIMG_2843.JPGIMG_2844.JPGIMG_2845.JPGIMG_2846.JPGIMG_2847.JPG

Those woofers re foamed will play low with authority. Not many people can say they have NASA designed speakers.

So the current plan is to have the JBL drivers re-foamed. I am attempting to locate someone within driving distance, if not, I will send them out next week.

Oh man those cabinets are so nice.
Hard to tell in the photo exactly, but are the dimensions pretty much on par with the Model 19?

Also, in the photo it looks like there are any middle bolts on the horn. You might want to add that if possible. And look into some foams for around the horn maybe?

Yeah I plan to treat the horn too, it is just stock and certainly could benefit from some dynamat type coating

It is Tuesday. Let us know when you install them. More pictures before and after install please. Is the top horn section open to the bottom bass bins?

I'll put up some pics tomorrow. I did get the woofers installed, there are moments of pure excellence but...they definetly need some work. I am going to let the foam surround break in for a week or so of action. I suspect the N500e crossovers are the current weak link... previous owner says no updates and he never opened the crossovers. So we probably have 50 year old caps.

While breaking in the woofer, I am going to research crossover schematics. The N500e is 16 ohm, which I think means on an 8 ohm woofer and compression driver it is currently at 250hz! I may have the match wrong but I think I am correct. Since both drivers are 8 ohm, this crossover is not ideal. I think I'd like to be somewhere in the 500-700hz range for crossover frequency.

I must say, Miller Sound was incredible! The work is amazing, woofers look new! And the people at Miller Sound are wonderful to talk to...
