Ski magazine (October, 1979): Ski

That uncrowded comment was prescient. The ski area at the top of Ascutney, which relied on natural snow to operate, has been closed for quite a few years :(

Just a little southwest of our little hamlet -- it kinda dominates the skyline from downtown.

OK, it ain't Mount Shasta, but it's what we've got! :)

Ascutney ('real' Abenaki name, Kaskadenak) is a monadnock (a free standing conical mountain, "isolated hill of bedrock" per Monadnock | geology ) with a summit of (per Wiki-p) 958 m (3144 ft). It is said to be an extinct volcano. I certainly hope it's extinct.

Whatever it be, it's a pretty impressive structure.

* per that "Britannica" citation, Mt. Monadnock (the mountain that put the Monadnock in Monadnock, the sine qua non) is a little taller -- but I guess it's not "free standing"... although it looks pretty free standing :p It does have "Little Monadnock" nearby. But Dammit, Jim! I'm a biochemist, not a geologist!
on that Shasta note, Mark........southbound I-5IMG_0847.jpgIMG_0844.jpgnorthbound@Weed (There's a weed store on Weed Ave. in Weed, CA.) who knew !!!!

Shasta (and Lassen, too) are beautiful.
All my photos thereof are of the old light and photosensitive emulsion kind. :)

I hung in there as long as I could, but after acquirIMG_E1304.jpging a Fuji XPro 1, my beloved Canon F-1n
(with original hand made 85 1.2 aspherical and 35 tilt and shift) moved in with my son and I
haven't looked back.
