@jmathers is just a stones throw away. I'll ring him up. On so many levels, I'm sorry Kegger has passed away. He was a good friend as well as a resource.

Those other wires are grounding wires from the shields of the grids and output wires. I'll disconnect them tomorrow and try again.

Simply Another Utter Novice's Amp Build - 300B

I've found them very, very nice. Not sure if they are worth the price if admission at 3X the price of the JJs. I need to spend some real quality time listening.

Sometimes USPS is great and sometimes not so much. I belive most of the problems are with customs as it seems that packages enter limbo there. The stuff I've ordered from Sowter seems to get lost as they are from the UK but packages from Estonia, Germany and Poland sail right on through with...

    Pre-Amp Build

I thought one connected the audio bus to chassis/earth ground at one point. I did that through the circuit Paul designed with a resistor/diodes and a cap. That is the white wire with the green stripe. I would do it as Shoshin suggested in an actual build. I attached all the RCA grounds as...

Maybe. But this is like a giant feedback loop. I think Paul said the second set of tubes biased the first so I'll have to look back.

    Lovely stuff.

    Pre-Amp Build

Tried a different cap-same results. Sometimes the sound oscillates and sometimes it just keeps buzzing at ever increasing volume. Statrs a few seconds after I power it up. It is so much worse than before it is hard to describe.

    Pre-Amp Build

Well, a complete and utter bust on trial. Voltages checked out perfectly and steady for 10 minutes or so. Plugged it into the rig and horrible screeching and wailing occurred! An ascending warble that took a while to die out after I yanked the plug. I suspect the 0.1uf cap across the rails...

Could you explain a bit about what is going on in Rev 2? I'm not grasping the circuit between the cathodes. I've wired it in there but I'm curious. Tia

So is higher or lower ripple desired in looking at specs for PS caps?

    General DIY Questions/Answers

We are all interested in caps and which to select. It seems there are 3 basic uses or maybe 4. 1) Power Supply 2) Coupling between stages or audio outputs 3) RIAA circuit 4) Cathode bypass Other than value and voltage, what does one look for when selecting these?

Could we get a few under the hood shots before you button things up? I really learn a lot by how others lay stuff out. Looks lovely.

Well that's a lot cheaper than the V-caps at $650 each.

    Available SUTs

You need either a SUT or head amp. Hagerman has head amps on his website I believe. So does K&K. Either will fix the problem. Just in a different way.

    Available SUTs

That exactly what they are for Dennis. The other option is a "head amp" which is recommended by some. I have a both and each sounds fine. The SUT is sort of the tube guys' go-to.

    Pre-Amp Build

Gauzy glamour shot. Heater voltages OK at 6.5V - may adjust if the rest works out. Should finish and test tomorrow. Some shielded 20g and 22g wire showed up today for the grids of the 2C22's and the output wiring. I need a recommendation for the 3.3uf coupling caps. I have Obbligatos but...
