Sold Altec 9849-8a part out 32c and 414-8c

Fantastic! What a great job you did on the cabinet! Can’t even tell which one it is. Thanks for posting. So glad to see it rehabilitated!

    Altec 605a frequency response curves

Looks good, but also wondering what crossover and diaphragms you’re using.

    Finding stuff in the world.

Hey, @Limberpine, just wondering if you got your compression driver working. I found some basket case 288’s, 2 c’s and a 16k, in similar shape and managed to get them all working, by digging out the voice coil gap. Takes a lot of patience.

How to dampen your (altec) cabinet

Lately, I’ve been thinking that there are two approaches to damping, you damp to control resonance of the cabinet panels and/or to absorb sound in the cabinet. Not that I’m an expert on either, but recently it’s the panel resonance I’ve concentrated on. I think when you dampen the panel, you...

DIY Altec 2 Way Build ala JELabs - 802/32/414

The 9849-8a I had briefly had the loading cap on the compression driver, which is not a capacitor but a plastic piece between the diaphragm and cover that many feel attenuated the highs. There’s some info on the forum about how to remove them. I always do. It still seemed like the high...

    The Emilar thread

A couple shots of the Emilar ea175b with the back off. The diaphragm is mounted in the back cover. So, when opening, try not to angle the back. Also makes me wonder whether those mounting screws against the compression or the rubber gasket can be used to align the voice coil in the gap...

    Let’s talk large format horns

I never thought it could happen to me, but fortune smiled, and I was able to acquire a magnificent pair of 805B horns, along with a pair of 288c’s and a lone 288-16k. The slightly bad news, is that the compression drivers were basket cases of corrosion. But, with liberal applications of wd-40...

    Charge coupled crossover

I’ve had the little caps in there awhile, week or two, maybe with the dc and it’s sounding really good. Although, now you’ve got me curious to try not putting the bypass caps in the dc scheme. But all is well so far. Pretty happy with it. I’ve dc biased what is the big cap in the altec...

    Charge coupled crossover

Just to follow up, I ended up bypassing with .22 uf panasonic caps I had on hand…jbl seems to like .01…and those alleviated the muted quality I was talking about earlier. Recommend including the bypass caps if you try this configuration.

Sold Altec 9849-8a part out 32c and 414-8c

Ok, rescued a single 9849-8a. The cabinet is pretty rough, has a big chunk out of it, dirty, dinged up…but the guts are pretty solid. Some sanding and a repaint, and it would probably be ok. If someone wants to buy the whole thing, make me an offer. But, being partial to the tangerine...

    DIY Altec cabinets…episode 1, the 614

Those are some fine choices! Congrats! I’m sure you’re going to be very happy. Looking forward to your thoughts on passive vs active crossovers.

Those look fantastic! What are you planning on loading into them?

    Charge coupled crossover

I’m using (2) 1/8 watt, I think, 1 meg at each end of the battery. I kind of want them to be like fuses in case of some kind of shorting accident. When I was comparing my 13 uf capacitor, which was actually 3 capacitors in parallel, to the charge coupled 13 uf, which was actually 4...

    Charge coupled crossover

I’d like to hear some TAD drivers some day. What caps did you end up with?

    Charge coupled crossover

This weekend I tried a charge coupled capacitor arrangement for the big capacitor in the Altec series style crossover. I’m pretty impressed. If I were to try to describe the sound, it’s like doubling your amplifier wattage. Just clean, articulate. Maybe because I wasn’t using a great...

Anyone know how to unglue a spider from the basket?

Just a slight voice coil rub. I actually ended up doing a variation on what Sean.m.miller1 suggested…put shims in, spread the MEK, let it dry, hit the spider and surround with a heat gun, and when everything settled, it seemed better.

    604E Crossover

The crossover I’m running in my big 2 ways, 803b/416a + Emilar 800a is pretty close to the n1500a. Lately, I’ve been messing with the 14uf cap value…currently at 15, tried 10-16, kind of messing with bessel through butterworth. Possibly also the phase/time correction? Wish I knew how to...

    Snell E, J and K vs. Audio Note AN-E, AN-J and AN-K

My original Snell E’s had variable resistors in the crossover, whereas I don’t think my later Snell j/iii’s did. There’s some degree of fine tuning. The E’s also has multiple caps in parallel…like 2 electrolytics, an orange drop, and a wima together in parallel. Peter Q once said not to...
