2020 Audio Plans

It’s never too late or too early. This year (2019 for those keeping score) will be behind us soon enough. My gear is in good shape. The only new thing that has just been delivered is a Pro-Ject Pre Box S2 Digital DAC. My main focus next year will be room acoustics. I recently added two bass traps (all foam), purchased a MiniDSP Umik-1 calibrated microphone to be used with REW (Room EQ Wizard) and Roon parametric equalizer function.

Build real boxes for the 604E duplexes. Clear out more extra stuff. Hopefully I can stick to this.

Delivery of new cabinets for my 414z's in December so seasoning and playing early 2020. Reshuffle my main headphone setup with the delivery of a new 45 amp, upgrade the office setup with it and gift the odd man out amp to one of the children. Purchase new (to me) 414z's for the cabinets I built that have grown on me, stain and veneer said cabinets. Put together a multiroom setup for my daughters apartment that includes her first turntable. Figure out a solution for subwoofer for my main system. Figure out some woofers for my garage system to go with the Mantaray's .

I'm sure there's more, I like to tinker, but that's all for the first 3 months or so.

1. Build stereo subs to “compliment” the 604’s
2. Buy a tube based or active Pre; thinking bottlehead BeePre or shindo.
3. Put together digital server/hub/streaming setup....
4. Finish eames chair.
5. Finish thorens TD160 plinth.
6. Build two way horn system with JBL components, same with Altec and VS them to see who’s king.
7. Room treatment; bass traps, panels.....
8. Sample higher level integrated amp for ease of use & sound quality comparison; Luxman?

I told myself that I'd get the Gumby turntable functioning and have a Raspberry Pi music server setup by the middle of next year. Amazingly in a fit of ambition, they both got accomplished two weeks ago. Now it's time to listen.

If you were my neighbor I would definitely consider it! I am finding out that it is easier just buy the item then try to refurbish it in order to accomplish or complete your list. Giving away the items is even quicker and a more cost-effective way too!

Someone please walk me off the ledge. I realize that my speaker stands are a bit wobbly for the Sony SS-M7s and energy is being lost. It's subtle, but does show up.

Anyway, I'm thinking about speaker stands, and next thing I know, I'm shopping for new amps, specifically PS Audio Stellar 700s or Parasound Halo A21+. I have no need for -deep breath, deep breath- anything right now, and the amps will only make the speakers wobble ever more vigorously. Maybe the tweeters might even catch fire from the friction, who knows. The best way to avoid a speaker fire is to avoid buying a new amp.

Anyway, I need speaker stands that support these bad boys. I'm thinking of starting with concrete blocks and horse stall mat cut to size. I think my wife will like that.

Then, maybe I'll go to a machine shop and have something custom built. Or maybe stick with the concrete. Either way, no amp.

2020 looks to be the year I'll finally be able to set up and dial in my super-vintage-mono-system. This is a system I've built out of curiosity more than anything else, assembled piecemeal as different things came up within driving distance and whatever budget I could assemble. What 2020 brings over other years is a change of place - a move to a larger, more permanent place.

Here's the to-do list:

Speakers - 1940's RCA Shearer Horn
-Build crossover
-Repair/rebuild horn throat adaptor (I'm considering having a bronze throat cast here in town)

Amplifier - Western Electric 124F
-Fly to New York to pick up amp from the person who was kind enough to take the rebuild project on

Turntable - Rek-O-Kut TR-43H
-Rewire power cord
-Build plinth

Really looking forward to hearing these pieces all singing together!

Scott and Redboy hashed a turntable from an old Empire. Scott milled a bunch of stuff to make it a very impressive beast.
