A few more Kestrels hit the market - None near me

I've noted my frustration in finding a nice, reasonably priced set of Kestrels. A few older listings can be found on USAudioMart. A few more have been spotted in recent days, all many hours drive from me in Washington, DC, one clear across the country. Most aren't available for shipping, which in any event, would be expensive. But someone might be geographically better positioned than me, so here are the new postings.

Kestrel Hot Rod in Athens, GA - Craigslist, $250

Kestrel Hot Rod in Ann Arbor, MI - Craigslist, $500

Kestrel Hot Rod in Charlotte, NC - Craigslist, $520

Kestrel 2 in Valencia, CA - USAudioMart, $650

They obviously differ in condition. If anyone knows of others closer to me, do let me know. Thanks.

Those all seem like quite reasonable prices. Just pay for shipping. I paid $700 a few years ago (including shipping) for my pair of not-hot-rod Kestrels to get them from CA to FL. They've made me happy. Man, now I'm tempted to buy another pair.

The Charlotte posting has been "deleted by its author", so can be presumed sold. No indication the other Hot Rods can be shipped, and the Kestrel 2 would run about $230 to ship.

Curious of those who've heard both the HR and the 2 how they compare them. Read somewhere the 2 can be placed closer to the wall due to its front port. That would help with placement here as I can't bring them too far into the room.

Scratch another one. The Kestrel 2 has been sold. Curious that some pieces sell in days while comparable units offered elsewhere, and similarly priced, remain unsold after months. An artifact I think of there being "few sellers, few buyers" scattered across a big country. They don't easily find each other.

I do use hifishark.com, even daily, as well as a crude Craigslist search trick. But the pickings for me remain slim. That Kestrel HR "up the road" is outside Philadelphia, a couple hours away. I actually considered it last Spring - and wrote about it here. My hesitation was due to the seller having painted over the wood veneer in black, which for me would have required stripping and refinishing. It was on Audiogon, down to $250, and I was tempted. Someone else bought it, and he is now trying to flip it for $400. The HRs in Athens, even with the veneer flaws, would be a better prospect at $250 if fetching it didn't involve 20 hours driving and an overnight.

I actually lived in Ann Arbor in my long ago grad school days. I used to do straight through drives to my then home in South Florida with a co-driver - almost 26 hours in five hour shifts. Now it's just me and I'm no longer that young man. I don't know what your "dream" speakers were, but for me the Kestrels just look like the best prospect to try time-aligned speakers, in a package and price I can live with. Others out there are mostly too big, too ugly, or too expensive.

Those looked to be some good deals you posted, so am not surprised that they didn’t last. If the market out your way is anything like out in AZ, things go quick! You have minutes to react if that. We have plenty of collectors and flippers out here too. I’ve also broadened my search area to improve my odds on certain items. You may have to sweeten the deal on a far drive buy and have the seller meet you half ways? Also, linking up with a few audio fans in your area might help get extra sets of eyes out for what you are looking for.
Happy hunting!

I have. The Wanted posting on USAudioMart for a Kestrel or Swift is mine. I got one response from a guy with an original Kestrel in Colorado. And another from a fellow in NJ who claimed to have a set of Kestrel 2s, but provided neither photos nor an asking price. Most recently I got a response from a guy asking if I'd pay $750 for a set of Kestrel 2s. My suspicions were raised when the photos he provided were identical to those in another listing for a set for $650. I thought it was the same guy looking for more money. But in fact it was from someone else who intended to buy from the owner after bargaining the price down, then resell them to me at a profit. One has to be careful out there.

Yes, be very careful with wanted ads, they seem like a magnet for potential scammers. If you get a response from the UK saying they have the very thing you're looking for in the shop, beware.
