All things Stephens Tru-Sonic

I upgrade to 5k toroid tweeter, the low-boy speaker sounds wonderful. Every time I turn it on, the instrument and the singer is in the back of the speakers confuse my friends, they don’t know which speaker is on 😂

I used the same driver combination for quite a while and could easily be content with them as my main speakers, very natural sounding. Very nice, enjoy!

Great Thread. I've seen Stephens advertisements in old HiFi magazines and wondered about them. By the way, Bert Berlant who owned Stephens also originated Concertone tape recorders.

Haznt been much posted here recently so I figured y’all might like some pics of my latest fun 🙃🙃

Very Cool! :)

Thanks for showing the phase-plug. I don't think I was aware it was a pepper-pot type.

Is the HF diaphragm venting through that felt-pad into the mesh screen to the outside ??

:)

Still crossing my fingers that the universe will bring me one of these to match that magnavox/Stephens 580006-g1 horn🤞
This pair sold for a obscene amount on well known auction site recently 😳😳😭😭😭😭

Yes the older Stephens have a vent on the back to the outside world 😊😊😊

Most of the Stephens products I’m familiar with have the same style phase plug, both my 216 and 206 axa have it.
What really surprised me was the difference in diaphragm design.
Older one has a housing that is metal and the coil winding is either aluminum or silver and quite a bit longer🤓
Both are 16 ohm coils🤷🏻‍♀️

Some Western Electric 555s had a screened rear vent. On occasion I ran Altec and JBL compression drivers without their rear caps, hoping to get a little dipole sound action. No dice.

Sad one died to provide my Stephens horn 😭😭
At least I wasn’t responsible for its demise lol
i wouldn't fret about it. There lots of folks that would make you feel guilty for parting one out but there really aren't that many people that would be willing to save one and sacrifice the space it takes. The number of horns that show up on ebay (even though the bring pretty good change) is indicative of how many are out there. You know those folks are all talk and no walk :).

I am hoping someone here can steer me in the right direction. I have a beautiful pair of Tru-sonic FR15 woofers that read open. They were working fine for years, but just suddenly died. First one, then a year later the second one went. I didn't over drive them and don't understand why this happened. At any rate, I loved the sound they produced, and would like to have them brought back from the dead. The cones on both are perfect with no coil rub. Any suggestions for repair? Thanks in advance!

There are a couple things I would check. One would be the connections through the speaker basket then the tinsel wire to the voice coil. Sometimes there is corrosion and a lost connection. If you can‘t find anything obvious, IMO your best bet would be to bring or send them to a reputable speaker repair shop so they can check them out and see if they’re good candidates for voice coil replacements (if they’re available). Best of luck to you, I hope you’re able to come up with a solution to keep them in use.

Thank you, I have checked the wire connection from the posts to the cone and they appear to be connected as they should be. I do not want to replace the cones as they are in excellent condition. Do you have any recommendations for a reputable company that can do a voice coil replacement?
