Altec Bolero 890c

Hey, I don’t post often but I have to talk about this speaker. Really blown away for what they can do. That fat juicy Altec midrange sound in a large bookshelf speaker. I prefer them to my Altec Seville’s. Driving them with my Radio Craftsmen C 500’s and seems to be a perfect fit. Have to be honest the RC’s make every speaker I’ve thrown at them sound better, if they are efficient enough. Been listening to them for a few hours now. We all known what that means.

I never heard a Bolero system but love the 406Z and 406-8y. The only 10” that’s better is the Altec 756B.

Closed box design, they sound different from Altec’s port designs. Not easy to get into the box,I like that, no urge to tinker. Really can’t compete with my 803A/32A/802D setup didn’t expect them to. They just boogie.

You know, I played mine with fleawatt amps but am thinking of using my retubed HK A300 (push/pull 6v6).

Love my recently acquired pair of 890C Boleros. To my surprise, I opened them up to recap the crossovers to find that a previous owner already installed new Dayton caps. Sound great with a variety of tube amps and don't need a lot of power. I agree they don't compete with my 414/802 setup, but they do have that pleasing full Altec sound.

I think I had the 406Z inside the Heath AS10 cabinet (similar size to the Madera?) in this video, 1uf PIO cap + L-pad > 802/32A.

My hunch is, the 406Z/8Y might sound even better in a larger box.
Are you thinking sealed or ported larger box? It would be a crime to separate the maderas or boleros from their 406’s but I’d entertain picking up separates.

I haven’t put much thought into it yet since I’m focused on other projects. But from my experience with older drivers, bigger is better. The Bolero and Madera were Altec’s answer to the onslaught of AR and other acoustic suspension designs, using a mini(mized) 414.

I’ve been collecting unloved 406 drivers for a couple of years and can assure you that I didn’t lay my hands on a Bolero or a Madera. 😉

I have a pair of 890cs as well, I love how cat proof the faux wooden grills are! They came in the original boxes, though one had coil rub when I got it so I had to go in and do some surgery to recenter it. To celebrate the successful surgery I recapped the crossovers, happy days from thereafter! I would love to hear the tweeters in the other Boleros... I think they are 3000g or something like that instead of the Heppner horns in ours? I've heard opinions that the 3000 tweeters sound superior which I find interesting because I actually really enjoy the horns on the c.

I don't really have much to compare them with, having fallen fairly recently into the audio rabbit hole (in some ways these speakers helped push me into that hole actually) but I think they sound great.

Hi all,

Periodically, I perform searches on "Altec Bolero" and "Altec 406" as I too own the 890Cs and love them... especially when driven with an el84 tube amp (Heathkit AA-151 modified by Sam Kim) - I find the bass to be much fuller than with a solid state, Kenwood Model 500 (upgraded by Echowars). (I find using the 4 ohm tap tightens up the bass.) I also don't think the Heppner horns are all that bad, but aware that seems to be the general consensus on the forums. At any rate, this chatter got me curious. So, I purchased a pair of Altec MR931-12 Mantaray horns with 902-8a/b drivers. I've yet to do anything with them, and hesitate to tear into the Boleros. But, I'm always wondering about building the ideal loudspeaker with the 406-8Y woofers with the Mantaray horns... whether to build sealed, ported or stick with passive radiator...ideal size, crossover. Wish I lived close to Danny at GR Research - Would love to have him take those two drivers and design/build the "perfect" loudspeaker! :) - they're a little to large to ship for my taste.

Any thoughts?

Cheers,
Jeff
