More or less (they're 1.5" taller, 1.75" narrower, and 0.75" shallower - so theoretically about half a cubic foot smaller in volume - and the port is quite a bit larger) but they're certainly trying for that aesthetic.

I had a builder put together some Altec 614 cabinets for me. He used the Heretic as a reference along with images of early originals and landed right around Heretic’s measurements.

I think the later 70s era 614 utility cabinet (without the sub baffle) is a little larger, as @Thermionics points out.

Hello HFH folks,

I'm looking for someone in the Seattle area to build a couple 3/4" birch ply 614-style cabinets. The only reliable guy I've found thus far is in Portland. Though he does KILLER work, ~$1,000 for enclosures in addition to 6 - 7 hours of driving doesn't feel like a deal to me.

Any recommendations?

That said, the dream scenario is to spend reasonable money for a pair of patina'd original 614 cabinets but that is, as ever, a long shot.

We heard them at one of our audio club meetings. A local dealer provided a pair in theatre gray.

I thought they sounded ok. They weren’t a WOW for me. Most agreed. Especially given the price.

That said, speaker sound is quite personal. You would have to hear them for yourself

Yes, it appears that way. Health issues of the owner is the cause from what I've read.

i liked the idea and was something I was conceptualizing as well. Just so difficult to get the great midrange tone out of anything but the Altec drivers. And without that, what's the purpose? You build it with the 416 and the correct compression driver and you can make a go of it...but it still wont have a lot of bottom end.
