Audio lows and highs 2023.

but some of the jazz DJs use that "Cool jazz dude" voice that can be as annoying as the screaming idiots on the rock stations.
I can't knock 'em too much, as one of my fellow high school grads is a DJ on a local classic rock station (after many years at WRIF) and uses "Screamin'" as part of his name. 😁

Highs would be the addition of a whole-house mesh Wi-Fi setup last week. OMG why did I not do this earlier.
I had a similar revelation about four or five years ago when I dumped a bit more cash than I wanted and went with a full-on enterprise-grade network and WiFi install in the home. Other than the garage reception being a bit weak (understandable, as it has three thick walls to push through and it's a distance from the house), we've gotten darn good WiFi here. Prior to that, I had three consumer-grade access points in the house and always had dead spots. I have a couple of ways I could fix the garage situation, but don't really want to put in that kind of infrastructure as we don't plan on staying here much longer. In the interim though, I could use a spare access point as a repeater out there.

My kiddo has had bad luck with her mesh system, but only due to something about the VPN her office uses--if it even connects, the speed is so slow that it's unusable. Yet she can enable the WiFi on their fiber interface and it works fine there. For her and the roomies, though, they're getting nice household coverage with the modest mesh system that I recommended. It's nice to be able to recommend something that actually works! 👍

You might be able to slip your Brussels sprouts epiphany in as a high. It was audio related.
In fact, we're squarely in those It was the best of times, it was the worst of times territory with the sprouts and the Fisher.

Dinner with you and your charming, and lovely, bride definitely fell into the "best of times" category.
The Brussels sprouts were the figurative cherry on top.

I had several good audio highs in 2023, including buying 2 pairs of excellent speakers (Magnepan 1.7i’s & Eminent Technology LFT-8’s) and my endgame preamp (Pass Labs XP-12). No real audio lows to speak of, overall it’s been a pretty darn good year in my audio world.

I ain't gonna work on Maggie's Farm, no more
No, I ain't gonna work on Maggie's Farm, no more
Well, I wake up in the morning, fold my hands, and pray for rain
I got a head full of ideas, that are drivin' me insane
It's a shame, the way she makes me
Scrub the floor
I ain't gonna work on, nah
I ain't gonna work on Maggie's Farm, no more

Sold a bunch of stuff in 2023 to further my progress down the road to Meadowlark, so that was good.

On the positive side of acquisition:

  • a Koetsu Rosewood Signature Moving-coil
  • an AVA SET 400
  • an AVA Vision SLR
Also had my XX-2 Dynavector cart retipped!

Also acquired this, below, to help balance the acoustics in my ‘room from hell’ and it has made a noticeable difference.

Happily no negative acquisitions unless one counts my $0.50 yardsale purchase, below. I was told it worked fine. It didn’t. Didn’t even power up. Ridiculous waste of money. Might as well have thrown the $0.50 out the window. Am I made of money? No sir, I am not!

High = 30+ years of designing and this year a new experience: a system that I have not felt compelled to alter or improve, now going on nine months. Usually things start to get old in a month or so.

Low = the passing of Jeff Beck and the lingering sadness.

We're working on a stupendously idiotic LF system, that will arrive with a tribute to him. Maybe that'll help.

By Dynavector, or a third party? Mine's not sounding good the past couple of days and it's making me wonder if it's time...although I really haven't used it all that much.

Much respect and envy here...a Rosewood Signature has been on my must own list for a good 8 years now since I first heard one in Al Wise's mega system ( it was mounted on a hot rodded Nottingham Space Deck).

Such a beautiful combination of relaxed presentation and musicality...

Absolutely agree and I really need to get mine back into playable shape. That and the GoldBug Mr Briar are on the list for retip in 24.

Not as interesting as most posts, but our audio high point was visiting CAF and realizing that nothing we heard surpasses (for us) what we already have. Maybe with a bigger house and megabucks, but still happy as we are.
I get that feeling after AXPONA. I also realize that even if I had limitless funds or a larger dedicated room, I would only pick newer and/or larger versions of what I already own, as I've already settled on my end-game ideal setup. All the shiny loud things bleeting and blatting way too loudly at me from demo rooms are interesting but nothing I would put inside my four walls even if they were given to me.

Had a pretty great audio year in that I didn’t have any real highs or lows. I am happy with my current components with no feeling upgrade-itis (only small tweaks or carryover projects that need to be completed).
The closest thing to the thread topic was my search for some original H808’s for my iconic build, which only partially came to fruition (happy to score two but bummed it wasn’t a matched set)…first world problems.
