Beginning the RCA LC-1A adventure.

There is a tweeter that goes with those two auctions as well. Each item is $100, plus shipping. That bass cone looks really sad, like just put it out of its misery. The tweeter may or may not be working, though it has continuity. Its too bad they didn't unwrap it. If the tweeter is from the same unit as the bass cone it could be a mess. Voice coil looks good though.

Speaking of voice coils I did a not so precision comparison of the tweeters for the three units I have. Two are factory, one I made the former and wound the coil myself. I'll let you guys guess what is what.

Just browsing the speaker sites and a guy has an RCA LC1A frame, working voice coil and rear dust cap on for sale.Thay are on Hifishark
Sorry I missed this, could have used a tweeter but probably not as much as one of you guys. I hope it was you, gavcnew, or another member here who got what they needed! Good eye, RCA!

Thanks nelsress ,Well I'm the one that had both tweeters not working. As I said earlier in this thread I took 1 lc1a speaker to SPEAKER REPAIR in lake worth Florida to Carl last month. He called me Monday and said(your all set its fixed).I couldn't believe it. He explained to me when I got there that he opened it up and the lead was burnt on the voice coil so I brought my other one to him yesterday.$75.00 later I'm on my way home and cant wait to put back in the Karlson cabinet. Now I know why these are so sought after speakers. Memories growing up listening to them all came back to me. THIS ONE ALONE SOUNDS INCREDIBLE.Cant wait for the other one and hoping it's the same problem..If anybody needs his number here it is.Great guy.561-968-2360

Outstanding news, thank you! Now I have at least a little hope in bringing back to life the one bad tweeter that I have! Carl's THE MAN if he continues to have success repairing these! Did you send the whole speaker or did you remove the tweeter and ship it?

Carls shop is about 30 minutes from my house so I took the whole speaker to him,he did a wonderful job. He said he's worked on one years ago and actually has a customer that needs reckoning and he's going to do it. He has my other one now and I'm praying it's the same problem. It's hard to find anybody to even touch them with the knowledge which he has.The only other person I found was a guy in texas that someone mentioned about on one of these sights, his name was Don, Drfieldcoil.com. He emailed me back but kinda gave me a not interested feeling but he did say he was having some health issues at this time. I emailed him back about shipping before I found Carl and got no response. Hopefully he is ok. Anyway I'm thrilled I have one repaired an one to go and feel very comfortable with Speaker Repair. I'm sure if we get a hold of Carl you can send him the Tweeter only let me know how you make out. The one speaker alone sounds incredible.

RCA I'm really excited for you. You found someone who could do the work and the repair itself didn't break the bank. Cheers

BTW if any of you guys has a dead tweeter that can't be repaired drop me a line. I'm looking for some donor parts to try winding voice coils for the tweeters.

Well BACK IN ACTION! Carl finished my second LC1A on monday, called me an said your all set it is fixed. He had to dig a little deaper in the voice coil but repaired it to OE. These things sound so sweet. Forgot how good they actually sounded. Just unreal. I have Bose. Acoustimac 5 and acoustimac 7 sets and these sound way better. Now I'm wondering if I should clip the yellow lead for the teeter an add a 3/4 amp inline fuse or not? Any advice would be appreciated and if anybody needs Carl's # at speaker repair in Lake Worth Florida, look him up on Facebook @ Speaker Repair lake worth Florida, you will not be disappointed I guarentee it.Fuse or no fuse?

I'm glad for you that the second repair was a success as well. Great news.

I'd say yes to the fuse in-line with the tweeter. I've done the same thing, though I don't remember what the Ampere rating was. I also added a capacitor in series with the existing one, to raise the cut-off frequency for the tweeter. Again I don't know the value I used. My "good" units are in storage these days as my living space won't tolerate speakers in boxes as large as mine.

I'd love to hear you impression of the speakers in boxes that allow the sound to radiate directly into the room. Maybe your next project.

I tell ya,these karlson boxes sound really good as they are.My father built them with the blueprints that were available back then from Popular Mechanics July 1958 issue. That copy is still on internet. I don't know how they could sound better. That pic is for the 12" enclosure, mind are 15" a little different build.Inline fuse getting added next week. Thanks for the info David R.

Hello gents,

My father, Hans Dietze, designed the last version of the LC1 (the LC1-C) with extended HF response and improved HF power handling. I’m helping him sort out his large collection of stuff and although it will be a while until I have a full inventory we seem to have everything from MI 11411 smooth cone Olsen originals through all of the LC1 models in various condition. Limited numbers of speakers in various conditions and parts will be available, as well as some remaining Jon Sank- designed LS11 cabinets.

We also have rebuildable cores of RCA MI 9289 amplifiers (four 6550, 200W) which dad thinks are the best amplifiers to ever drive these with. Dad designed the last version, 9289D.

We additionally have some prototype higher power 15” horn drivers that RCA Sound Products was developing as a replacement for the 9449 and 11421 to overcome the lack of power handling while maintaining efficiency. They are a Hans Dietze design and really sound good in radial LF horns.

Any interest out there? It’s going to take some time to sort it all out, so please, serious inquiries only.

Thanks!

Hey Chris,

Thanks for your post, I know of your father and his work on the LC-1C project.

Nelson

I think that is so cool that your Dad was involved with these remarkable pieces of audio history. 🙂

Very glad to see your post here. I've sent an email as well, though you should prioritize Redboy's request first as he's yet to get a taste of these :)

Wow Chris great that you're inviting us in. Of course all of us will be looking for parts.

I hope every time your dad says something you're write it down, this kind direct information is ultra rare. On that note, can you grill your dad on some of the design build stuff and share? Tweeter diameter, number of turns, cone mass, kind of thing.

My Christmas list would be fabric surrounds to replace my shredded paper surrounds, and a supply of diffuser bumps. They're like a magnet for wandering fingers. "Push Here to See What Happens"
