Blue Note is getting into the premium LP reissue business. Rather than me type, here is a quote from the website:

"Blue Note Tone Poet Series
The Blue Note Tone Poet Series was born out of Blue Note President Don Was’ admiration for the exceptional audiophile Blue Note LP reissues presented by Music Matters. Was brought Joe Harley (from Music Matters), a.k.a. the “Tone Poet,” on board to curate and supervise a series of reissues from the Blue Note family oicf labels.

Extreme attention to detail has been paid to getting these right in every conceivable way, from the jacket graphics and printing quality to superior LP mastering (direct from the master tapes) by Kevin Gray to superb 180 gm audiophile LP pressings by Record Technology Inc. Every aspect of these Blue Note/Tone Poet releases is done to the highest possible standard. It means that you will never find a superior version. This is IT.
Blue Note Records’ Tone Poet Audiophile Vinyl Reissue Series is produced by Joe Harley and features all-analog, mastered-from-the-original-master-tape 180g audiophile vinyl reissues in deluxe gatefold packaging. Mastering is by Kevin Gray (Cohearent Audio) and vinyl is manufactured at Record Technology Incorporated (RTI)."

I expect that they will reissue titles that other entities have done; but the possibility of titles from the back catalog we may have not seen yet is an alluring prospect. This is Blue Note behind this, so its a different scenario than a third party asking for permission to access the tapes.

Wayne Shorter - Etcetera LP
Chick Corea - Now He Sings, Now He Sobs LP

As a follow up to this - I've just seen that Amazon.ca has these listed for preorder. $31.28 shipped for Prime members. I would have thought these be priced in the $30 USD range, and commensurately higher here. The Music Matters 33 rpm were more than that here, even before the prices started going thru the roof.

I have the Chick album preordered. Release date is February 22.

Spun my new LP's today. Have to say that this Tone Poet reissue was really nicely done. Absolutely perfect LP - flat, quiet. The jacket is gatefold, heavy duty, with great photos. Just like the few Music Matters I have. Bonus is that preordering thru Amazon made this about half the price I paid for the other MM titles. I hope they have other releases of interest.

Just did the pre-order for Money Jungle and The Cooker. I usually check out the title first on Tidal, and if what I heard yesterday remains true then "The Cooker" could be a really nice sounding LP.

Just got my copy of Money Jungle from a small local record store (the owner is taking online orders and making deliveries since the store, as an unessential business, isn't actually open). Looking forward to cleaning and playing it very soon. Not long after my post above, I checked the copy that I have, and it's one of the Blue Note DMM pressings. So it'll be interesting to hear this one.

Is there a price increase on this title also or is it just me?
The Blue Note store shows $34.98 which is the same as earlier releases AFAIK. My pre-order on Amazon is a bit more, but on previous purchases like this the price reduced by the time it shipped.

Just did a search for "Tone Poet" on Amazon (looking for a particular title), and it appears that there are some things in the works that release in September? Like some "new" (for the series) Hancock and Jimmy Smith + Stanley Turrentine. Didn't see them listed on Blue Note's site, but Amazon often has a way of knowing . . .

Which titles ? That reminds me - while I'm listening to Joe Henderson's State of the Tenor, Vol. 2 I better step up for Vol. 1 .

Looks like:
  • Horace Silver, Further Explorations
  • Herbie Hancock, My Point of View
  • Jimmy Smith, Prayer Meetin'
With reported release dates of September 25th. Guess I'll have something to look forward to in September. :)

I ended up returning the second State Of The Tenor Vol. 1, and Amazon wasn't offering replacement this time. Just refund. They either don't have stock or restricting the amount of returns. Oh well.

I'm looking forward next to Duke Pearson's "Phantom" released at the end of October. If I didn't have a Pure Pleasure copy of Bobby Hutcherson's "Oblique" I'd get that too. Who knows, maybe I will after all.
