Sold Cartridge Decison Made

Has Been Sold
An update and impressions of my new Dynavector 10x5. It is by far the best cartridge I’ve ever owned. It delivers gobs of detail without one whit or iota of harshness. Pinpoint imaging front, back, left, right and on either side of the speakers when the recording calls for it. But when I say “pinpoint imaging” I don’t mean sterile, I mean it paints a realistic musical picture, not just of the position of performers but of the “effort” they are making, the slight pressure changes of their vocals, whether thy are facing the microphone directly or have moved slightly away or side to side.

Timbre reproduction accuracy across the board. It’s also the most difficult cartridge to describe. Dynavector describes their sound as smooth and it is, but this Shibata delivers subtle detail behind, above, left right forward and backwards. It’s probably the last cart for a while.

I would not have made the foolish decision to make an exit from vinyl if I had stepped up to the Dynavector 10x5 MK II a long time ago. I’m glad I’m back.

When I brought a turntable back in after using digital sources for years, I was fairly underwhelmed by the sound. I think after about six months of "is this all there is" with my setup I decided to take a chance and upgraded the bundled cart to a 10x5. That was the "aha" moment, and enjoyment ensued. I still have that Dyna, though well used now. Probably a good candidate for retipping, as I got this before the price hike.

I think Dynavector is a pretty safe bet as a brand, IMO.

Thanks for the update, Mike.
I always thought the 10X5 was a brilliant cartridge, in want of a proper stylus. It was beautifully enjoyable, but you could tell a lot of the music was being left behind. Id always wanted to try what Dynavector did, but it would not have been a cheap experiment.
So I'm thrilled that it worked out as well as we both hoped. Congrats on what must be a fantastic music playback, at what really isn't a horrible price in the wacky world of audio!
