Cast aluminum WP12024

I had a two day head start on you, I got mine on Wednesday, had them set up in short order, my 811b are now in my storage area. These horns sound as good as they look, to me , much smoother and less "shouty" than the 811's. Great craftmanship all around, the brackets are well thought out, the color is very nice. Now to finish cleaning up these A7's.
@nickel625, I was behind you a few days, but I have just got my horns up and running! Man, do they sound fantastic.
Supposed to have Hurricane Helene in my backyard tonight around 10 p.m., but if me and my 5 cats and dog blow away, at least I have
heard some great Dave Brubeck before it hits.

The cabinets were originally some Rectilinear Lowboys., with new contents Anyway, just blocked off where I previously had my 5 X 15 ABS guide. These new horns have brought the sound 3-D and alive. Couldn't be happier!!!....and thanks again Trieu.

@dfoulk, looks great and glad to hear you enjoy the sound. Good luck this evening with the storm. I see you fastened your legs directly to the cabinet, I am going a different route. I have some 1/2" plywood that I am having cut, I'll paint and then mount the horn to the plywood. A few pieces of felt underneath and that will be accomplished. Next up sanding, filling in and repainting my A-7's.

Cheers

We were spared this time. Did angle the horns up just a tad this morning, using the bottom hole on the rear support bracket.
The storm wasn't the best for sleeping! The speakers look a bit more civilized with the front grills on, the way I normally have them. The other photo was just to reveal the previous horn guide, and it's sealing with a plywood blank.

yes, Radian PB 475-16, the Crossovers are Pete Riggle designed N-800 circuit, built by a pal during covid. I actually have one extra crossover available from a Mono project I did then parted out. Cheers

Most interesting. I have a pair of those radians and am considering putting them in my 12024s as well. Funny, I was just up at Pete’s two weekends ago. He’s an old friend of 20 years. We played around with drivers on my pair of Trieu’s 808 horns, including Pete’s 475-8s (I turned him onto these many years ago and he prefers them to his 802s).
The combination didn’t work, especially well on his A7 bass bins. The problem was not the 500 cycle crossover but the lack of a notch filter at 1500hz, more than likely. That being said, they sure did layering and texture beautifully on orchestral music.-:)

Small world....If you are ever in the Tacoma area hit me up and you are welcome to take a listen to my set up. It sounds fine to me, but maybe I am missing something. For now I am just going to do a bit of cosmetic clean up on the A7's and enjoy.

Hi Scott-
Thanks for the offer. I do get up to Olympia and Seattle from time to time to see friends so I may take you up on it. Back at ya' if you're down in Portland.

How I rigged an autoformer type crossover with the help of Dave Slagle and Joe Roberts + further thoughts on the WP12024 😊

Nice blog as always! Did you like the autoformer better in your first configuration with the shunt l-pad or better in the configuration without the l-pad?

Thanks!

Short answer is, yes! However, as mentioned in the article, I didn’t spend as much time tweaking the configuration without Rshunt because I already found the sweet spot with the 2uf at the primary + Rshunt in the 34-36 Ohm range, which was very close to the 39 Ohm mathematically derived value.

WRT the configuration without Rshunt, I purposely omitted the detail below from the article because I wanted to focus on discussing my preference for using PIO caps of less than 4uf in crossovers.
2500Hz.jpeg

When I measured the 11 Ohm impedance @ 2500 Hz from the 802/20275 drivers, I added a 1.5uf PIO to the WE 4.25 to approximate the XO calculator’s actual recommended value of 5.78 uf and preferred the sound with the 4.25 uf WE cap alone.

I blog about my audio adventures to encourage people to experiment on their own and discover what enhances their musical experience. This particular segment in the blog article should serve only as a starting point or template for those interested in using a speaker autoformer in their crossover.

I should go back to my XO and use the math you have given and see where I land.
I did use Dave's R shunt calculator and also did as you with an l pad.
Thanks for sharing.

First impressions: I recieved the horns 5 days after ordering but just got to mounting them in a provisional way yesterday evening.

Contact with @Tsingtao_1903 was great, quick replies regarding my questions and super fast shipping, well packed. Thank you sir!

Now about the horns. My speakers are DIY Altec style cabinets (612/614 style) with 150liters of volume. 416b woofers, 32a horns (the metal version of the famed 32c horn) 806a compression driver and jbl2405h supertweeter, Werner Jagusch Crossover.

To make things short: I love these new horns and I think I prefer them quite a bit over the 32a Horns as they cater more to my listening habits.
The 32a was a bit tame in the highs, laid back and - dare I say it - a little flat sounding. The 12024 boosts everything up a notch: More clarity, more sparkle, more texture and tactile sounds (metallic sounds feel more metallic, you feel the pluck of the strings of bass or a guitar) and I think a wider soundstage. In short: More fun! The 32a is still a great horn (more accurate, less euphonic, neutral), but the 12024 is what I am looking for.

No pictures yet as the setup is not pretty at the moment. Trieu, thank you!
