Chicken or Egg?

I was listening to my system today and had a brief moment of contemplation about how it came to be as it is - which I like very much. The thought occurred to me whether my taste in sound has been sort of innate, or whether my choices of gear over the years have rather formed those tastes. Undoubtedly a bit of both, but I think that to a fair extent I've had from the beginning an idea of what I was chasing. Maybe?

Any thoughts on that?

I think from my listening chair probably both.
Oddly enough I had similar thoughts the other day.

With a few big "Aha!" moments along the way as well I guess, mostly hearing someone else's system.
That is something I need, to hear some other systems. After moving here 8 years ago I no longer have anyone close by that's into this hobby.

I've pondered that same question for years and can only explain my conclusion as "great question!"

"Nature or Nurture?"

When I started this journey 10 years ago, it was on the vintage side of things. I longed for the sound of my youth and when I got the first vintage system it sounded wonderful to me. As I moved up the equipment food chain I began to realize that there was much more to be had. I chased an elusive target for some time but finally reached a point of satisfaction. I put the system that I have together a piece at a time and I couldn't be happier with how it has turned out. I thoroughly enjoy listening to other peoples systems and do so whenever I can but when I get home and listen to my system, I am just that, at home and it is nice. Of all of the systems I have heard, there are none that scream "DUMP YOUR STUFF AND BUY ME"! Thankfully, my taste in sound seems to have converged with the gear that I acquired. Before I ran out of money.
