Connect Magnavox Astro Sonic to Sonos Speakers

Hello,

I am new here so apologies for any audio faux pas I may be committing, but here is what I am looking for advice on.

I inherited an old Magnavox Astro Sonic from my grandparents a few years ago. I have always been planning to do something with it, either upgrade the speakers, take it to an audio shop to have it cleaned up, etc. Recently, I decided I want to try to connect it to some Sonos speakers (arc) and sub that I already have in my living room. I’ve done some research regarding how this might work, and I found that I need to connect one of two things to the Astro Sonic to make this work. Either a Sonos Amp or Sonos Port. The Amp obviously has an amplifier built into it whereas the Port does not. Both can wirelessly connect to other WiFi enabled speakers, which is what I would like to do to connect the Astro Sonic record player to my existing Sonos speakers.

As someone who doesn’t have a lot of experience working with audio equipment (I’m usually a plug and play kind of guy), I have two primary questions:

1. I assume the Astro Sonic (late 60’s model I believe) has an app already, but I’m assuming the Sonos Amp would be a step up in quality, meaning the eventually audio output would be better than using the existing amp in the Astro Sonic. Would this make a difference in sound quality, or could I just buy the Sonos Port strictly for the connectivity and not for an improved amplifier?

2. What kind of wiring would I need to connect the Astro Sonic to the Sonos Amp/Port? In the back of the Astro Sonic, there is a panel with wiring and labels but, like I mentioned before, I’m not too technical so I’m not sure what I would need to hook everything up.

Attached is a picture of the panel with plugs. Also here is a link to the Sonos Port product. It apparently comes with banana clips and RCA plugs- Amp: The Wireless Streaming Amplifier | Sonos

Thanks for any insight you all might have!

If the Sonos arc has a line input then you could likely take the tape output (if available) on the console to the line input on the arc. You would likely just need a y cable to go from 3.5 stereo to RCA's. If the arc does not have a line in then you would need to use a connect and plug the line in there. Then you would need to choose the line in on the Sonos software as the source. At least in theory. Not sure from your pic if that is a tape output or input.

Actually looking again at the pic it looks like the tape out jacks are missing so I don't think there is a viable option without having some work done to the console, specifically having the tape out jacks reinstalled.

Thanks Mike! That’s helpful information. I’ll have to figure something else out then since I was hoping not to have to re-wire or add wires to the existing setup.
