I am new here so apologies for any audio faux pas I may be committing, but here is what I am looking for advice on.
I inherited an old Magnavox Astro Sonic from my grandparents a few years ago. I have always been planning to do something with it, either upgrade the speakers, take it to an audio shop to have it cleaned up, etc. Recently, I decided I want to try to connect it to some Sonos speakers (arc) and sub that I already have in my living room. I’ve done some research regarding how this might work, and I found that I need to connect one of two things to the Astro Sonic to make this work. Either a Sonos Amp or Sonos Port. The Amp obviously has an amplifier built into it whereas the Port does not. Both can wirelessly connect to other WiFi enabled speakers, which is what I would like to do to connect the Astro Sonic record player to my existing Sonos speakers.
As someone who doesn’t have a lot of experience working with audio equipment (I’m usually a plug and play kind of guy), I have two primary questions:
1. I assume the Astro Sonic (late 60’s model I believe) has an app already, but I’m assuming the Sonos Amp would be a step up in quality, meaning the eventually audio output would be better than using the existing amp in the Astro Sonic. Would this make a difference in sound quality, or could I just buy the Sonos Port strictly for the connectivity and not for an improved amplifier?
2. What kind of wiring would I need to connect the Astro Sonic to the Sonos Amp/Port? In the back of the Astro Sonic, there is a panel with wiring and labels but, like I mentioned before, I’m not too technical so I’m not sure what I would need to hook everything up.
