Considering Creating a PC-Based Music Database

I need to keep my software skills exercized. I am thinking about creating a PC-based music database for my own collection, that might also be useful for my friends.

This system should be useable on any PC system (Macs not so much), and be self-contained, and install easily.

Here are the features I am considering:
  • Music by artist (last name first)
  • Music by genre, then artist (last name first)
  • Music by number (I have many cassettes that are stored by cassette number), side A or B
For a particular source, I want to include the following:
  • Artist or group name (ordered by first or last name)
  • Work or album name
  • List of cuts (by side and/or number, time, location on what machine (index number))
  • Up to 8 images (Cover art, etc.)
  • Unique Identifiers (pressing, lead out grove info, etc.)
Mix tapes/discs (good also for creating/considering cuts to include on new):
  • Cut name
  • Cut time
  • Cut order in the mix
  • Album
  • Artist
  • Format
Search by:
  • Artist first name
  • Artist last name
  • Number
  • Cut name
  • Album Name
Print by:
  • Genre
  • Number
  • Artist First Name
  • Artist Last Name
  • Album Name
What other info or features might be nice to have?

Enjoy,
Rich P

What I’ve found a bit lacking is a logical way to organize classical stuff. Fields would be composer, orchestra or other, who conducted, type of composition, and bonus points for label. Something like they way filters work in excel would allow me to search/play all Reiner/CSO recordings, for example. Or just sonatas written by Mozart. Or Telarc recordings.

Probably out of scope, but it would be great if all this could be ported to a smartphone so I’d know what I already have when I’m shopping for music.

Record label, label catalog ID, deadwax info.

Also miscellaneous open field(s) for additional information (such as "RSD2012" or "limited swirl vinyl" or "HDCD")

+1 for record label. Being able to filter by label or artist and label would be nice. Such as "Music Mattters" or "Coltrane + Impulse".
