Designing and assembling the ultimate horn based system

Over the past five years I have been on an extensive and comprehensive deep dive of all things Single Ended Triode & DHT ampfification paired with horn loaded and open-baffle speakers. I have experimented and own just about every topology and combination. I must admit that it became obvious to me that I was late to the party as I had been reading about SET, horns, and open baffle speakers since the early 2000’s but had not really experienced this faction of the hobby. Until this point, I was only using and listening massive Class-A biased solid-state and tube amps required to power my not-so efficient magnetic planner, electrostatic and conventional sealed and ported box speakers. The so call “flea power” amps require high efficiency speakers to perform not only optimal but at useable sound pressure levels; they kind of go hand in hand. I chronicled a partial account of my systems with pictures and videos on my “Friday Night Listening” thread on another site forum:

Friday night listening

As I got in deeper in the rabbit hole, experiencing JE Labs style open baffles, Fertin field-coil full-range drivers, DHT filament-bias linestage preamplifiers driving Single Ended Triode and Single Ended OTL amplifiers, I spent less and less time listening to my “big” reference system based on a pair of Wisdom Audio Adrenaline Rush speaker system driven by 10 high power solid state monoblocks amplifiers in a complex but fairly traditional high-end system. What I noticed was the intimacy, clarity, transparency, and organic sound qualities of the low power tube amplification combined with horn speakers or open baffle full range drivers produce. My main reference system went unplayed for the better part of the last few years while I lived in the wonderful altered universe.

In order to restore the supremacy of my reference system I developed a method and process for “Remastering” the sound presentation of the system to incorporate the characteristics of my low power DHT/SET-horn-open baffle systems. I have been successful at dialing in a sound that is ideal to me and reproduces music with a “live” sound feel and immediacy. I have documented this process over on another site forum:

There is a smarter way

After achieving my objective with my “WAAR” reference system, I turned my attention back to my extensive collection of SET amplifiers, DHT preamplifiers, horn and open-baffle speakers and I told myself these are all great sounding components and systems but as systems they were not an ultimate expression of what could be achieved without limits in this realm. That’s when I told myself that I must put together a “reference” level horn based system that combines the crucial elements that I have experienced and learned. This brings me to the system that I’m listening to as I type this. A system where every single aspect has been taken into consideration and optimized in terms of performance. I’m a strong believer that cost does not correlate to quality so I did not set out to assemble components based on their cost but rather I picked the best performers available to me regardless of their cost or panache. What I am after is best sound above all and have no interest in parading pride of ownership trophies. I’m also a firm believer that the best sound and components comes from the DIY community over at DIYAudio and not in turn key commercial offerings. Again these are just my opinions and experiences and I’m certainly not here to convince anyone who believes otherwise. One thing that I have experienced is that the best performers come from design houses that build small-batch, bespoke and manufacturers that specialize on one component. These unique and special products tend to be bespoke, one-of-kind, and are typically rare and hard to source. I believe that I have typed enough to get my point across.

So I have assembled a six-way SET, horn, open-baffle, field-coil, Finemet transformers based crossovers, ultra-high efficiency (118db in one set of the compression drivers and 114db in a second set) that comfortably reproduces 27Hz to 30 KHz in a way that is truly spectacular and magnificent. When assembling this type of system with analog crossovers not only must you adjust gain levels of the different drivers but more challenging is keeping the drivers phase coherent without the use of digital delay. It has not been as easy to dial in this system but the results have definitely been worth the effort:

That is a serious looking system. Can you expand on the sources a little?

Source is mainly streaming from Tidal through Roon ==> HQPLAYER 5 at DSD1024 and DSD512 ==> UltraRendu NAA ==> T+A 200DAC. Analog source is a Micro-Seiki BL-111 turntable with Denon DL-S1 Low Output MC cartridge ==> Micro-Seiki MA-505 MKIII tonearm with ==> Ortofon 6NX-TSW-1010 tonearm cable into the Electron-Images Amati preamplifier’s internal high-gain phonostage (2-EC91/6AQ4/CV4070 and 2-12AY7A/6072A tubes).

Do you use a measurement other than your ears to adjust "driver phase coherence?"

By ear is the way that I have done it with this system. On my other 4-way horn system with a digital crossover, I set the delays timings for the drivers with measurements.

Sweet. I have heard very positive feedback on that T+A200. And I too run a Micro Deck and absolutely love it.

The T+A 200DAC was designed for high rate DSD and it excels with HQPLAYER 5. It has great midbass delineation & articulation and high frequency detail, is perfect in this system.

Nice, classic Micro-Seiki tables have a very organic and musical sound, again a great match with this system.

You sir have went off the deep end! Some might say you belong in the loony bin! If so, let me know where I can get a straight jacket to join you for a listen! :)

Like you after hearing what SET paired with high efficiency speakers can do, you can’t un-hear it!!
It is like sitting before a fireplace for the very first time, when your only exposure previously was seeing one on tv (or something along those lines).

very impressive. did i miss what you are using for amplification?

0) Electron Images “Amati” dual chassis preamplifier, with built in high-gain MC phonostage
1) A pair of Eternal Arts “Arpa” AD1 SE monoblock amplifiers by Dr. Burkhardt Schwäbe from 340 Hz to 3 KHz and from 6.8 KHz - 21 KHz
2) Radu Tarta “Sublime” PSE 4P1L amplifier from 3 KHz to 6.8 KHz and from 21 KHz - 30 KHz
3) A pair of Hypex FA503 Fusion Amps in bridged mode for 1000W from 80 Hz - 340 Hz
4) A pair of Crown XLS-1002 Series 2 amplifiers in bridged mode for 1100W from 27 Hz - 80 Hz

An impressive collection and would love to sit down for a listen. For me personally think I would be a bit overwhelmed by the complexity. Really like to keep things as simple as possible.

I have a number of simple full range single driver horn loaded and open baffle systems that produce exceptional sound. My open baffle single full range driver system with the Fertin field coil 20EX with silver voice coils and my full range Stefan Stamm full range driver in my Loth-X Polaris back horn loaded cabinets for example sound phenomenal. The issue when listening to these simple systems compared to my “Big” conventional reference system with the Wisdom Audio Adrenaline Rush speaker systems is that the simple systems are limited in terms of scale, dynamics, and extension at both frequency extremes. It was those limitations that I aimed to overcome with this all out horn reference system. I wanted to have that sound but without any constraints, in terms of the music I listen to. With some of my music you can literally cause physical damage to my simple systems. There is only so much you can do with drivers rated for 6W or even 20W driven by amps rated for 0.75W (171A), 1.25W (46), or by Type 10Y/801A, 45, 183/483, AD1, 2A3, 300B Single Ended Triode amplifiers. I have to use these simple & low power systems within their comfortable working envelopes, while with my new Ultimate horn system it is really without bounds. It is good to now have a horn based system that can compete for absolute reference status supremacy with my WAAR system, with the system Remastering process implemented.

Most of here have been at this quite some time and know what we like. Tried lots of things over the years. Single driver horn loaded and open baffles didn't do it for me either. Sure your system sounds great to you. When I complicate things, the more I want fiddle with it. The more I fiddle the less I enjoy the music.

Understood. I have been in the audio hobby as a hardcore enthusiast for the last 35+ years and have now used and experienced every faction of this hobby in depth. What my experience has shown me is that there is more than one road to audio nirvana. I’m now pretty agnostic in regards to system topologies and to me what matters in the end is the resultant sound. If you browse though my “Friday night listening” thread on the link on the first post you will get a flavor of my gear and experience. I will post some videos of a few of my systems playing back the same songs to provide a glimpse of the sound of the different systems. When you keep an open mind….you leave yourself open to positive surprises and experiences.

WOW! A lot of very impressive components. Nice effort to assemble all of that.

This is a six way system? What are the details of all those horns and drivers? It looks like your listening chair is very nearfield. How close are you to the speakers?

Thanks. Yes, it is a six-way system. What is not obvious is that one of the front horn loaded drivers is a coaxial. The spatial distances depicted in the pictures are a little misleading as everything is huge or massive, including the listening chair. Everything except the mid bass horns is at least 10 feet away from the listening chair. I do position all my listening chairs in the near field to obviate the effects of the room acoustics.

The horns are all custom bespoke made so there are no model information. The Western Electric 22A horns were made in Japan. The Edgarhorn midrange horns were made in Canada, as were the Jean-Michel Le Cleac’h horns for the super-tweeters. The open baffle for the subwoofers were made by Siemens during the Klangfilm era.

The drivers are all custom, modified or bespoke affairs also:

Lamar Audio Engineering M2-16 field-coil WE-555-W compression drivers.

Custom modified G.T. Sound GSU-D04R’s/BMS-4590 coaxial compression drivers.

Subwoofers drivers are Sound Splinter RL-S-12’s.

Custom modified BMS-4540ND compression drivers.

Custom designed bespoke Audio Technology C-Quenze 23 I 52 20 06 SD by Per Skaaning in Denmark.

The drivers were specifically chosen and modified/tuned for this project.

Decided to listen to some gothic music last night during my Friday night listening session, as after all it was Friday the 13th, my wife has the whole house decorated for Halloween, and in honor of the annular solar eclipse:
