Diatone P610

Has anyone here ever built speakers with this driver or even heard a pair?

Please share your thoughts.diatone_610mb.jpg

Ooooo those look good. I've been tempted by the replicas on eBay for a long time

I had a pair in the mid 90s. Best 6.5" full range I heard until I found Pioneer PIM6Ls (smaller sibling of the SK98/PIM8/20L) in their original Lafayette cabs. In its bass reflex box, the PM610 had a tendency to boom in the mid-bass + a slight sizzle in the highs. Since the PIM6L had less frequency extremes, the midrange was more vivid. I also tried both drivers in open baffles. Less boom from the Diatone, but the PIM6L was still more refined.

Going over some negatives recently, I found this Diatone pic.

The goat leather version is cheap and I’ve heard that they sound good.

Speak to us of those original Lafayette cabinets, if you would. :)
I assume (??) they were not "Eliptoflex" (LRE's own imaginative spelling, not my typo!) since those were designed for 12" drivers.

I remember reading the Boston Bash '99 article! Seems like yesterday. Stereo Sound Tube Kingdom in the mid 90s published several DIY cabs for the the PM610. One of them was significantly larger than the stock cabinet.

The PIM6L was not in an Eliptoflex cabinet. It was just a regular bass-reflex cabinet slightly smaller than the Diatone cab. IIRC, it was also made in Japan.

That shindig at Jamie Melhuish's house in Newton was the real beginning of a long downward spiral for me -- I fell in with a bad crowd there.

I know that this is an old thread.

This might be the enclosure that JE2A3 referred to. It is the factory enclosure. I have a beat up pair of the enclosures with the PIM drivers. They sound quite nice but one of the drivers has a slight weak spot in the surround that can be heard when music is played. I just found my bottle of Aileene's tacky glue perhaps I can attempt a repair today.
