Favorite Detroit Area Record Stores

Hello again, guys…Being from the Detroit area, I thought we could discuss all of our favorite local record stores from back in the day…Let me start…Who remembers when Lakeside Mall had Musicland, Record Town and Tape World, well before f.y.e.? How about Musicland’s special Classical music room? Who remembers when Tilt Arcade and the Hydrotube water slide used to be there, as well as Santa Claus and his sleigh every December? How about the numerous Harmony Houses where I bought many an LP, 45’ or cassette single? I remember 23 and Van Dyke, next to where Kee’s Pets is now, Rochester & Hamlin and Hall & Schoenherr, among other locations, such as the one on Woodward! Buying tapes and records at KMart? Stereo equipment and accessories at Radio Shack? What about Sam’s Jams in Ferndale, Car City Records in St. Clair Shores and the old Record Time on Gratiot, back when Gratiot had a drive-in theater? Who bought records at Rock-A-Billy’s (either at their 23 & Van Dyke location, 22 & Van Dyke location or later Hall Rd. location) and Ultrasounds in Utica or at Gibraltar Trade Center in Mt. Clemens? Who remembers Sound Warehouse on Hall Rd. in the 90’s or buying stereo equipment at Service Merchandise? What about getting your CD’s at Media Play and Borders, well before there was a Barnes & Noble or 2nd & Charles (coincidentally, one of my new favorite record spots, along with Media Reload)? How about when Bejnar’s Furniture used to sell records? Who remembers searching through Phonologs to find record titles…and later, Muze kiosks? Who remembers special ordering records, tapes and CD’s that were not in stock? All as memorable as watching a movie at Winchester Mall, Hampton 4 or Lakeside! If you guys have an active memory like mine, let’s talk about it all here!

Let’s see if this jogs your memory…I remember when Harmony House had the Peaches and Napa Valley-style crates…But, at an estate sale last year, I found this cool cassette case…

It was only $8.00, but half-off ($4.00) on the last day of the sale…

Of course, I had seen some turntable accessories inside, but didn’t know what I had until I got home…I grabbed the case last minute and rushed home before the sale closed on Saturday…

Later on, I took a better look…Turns out there were a couple of B&O cartridges, a JVC headshell, an Ortofon OM20 stylus, a Shure tracking force gauge, a Dual CS 5000 belt and a number of other cool items, including THIS, a prized possession for my Dual 1219!

Not a bad haul, eh? I was initially only interested in the tape case as a great piece of local record store memorabilia, but it turned out to be so much more! So, in addition to local record stores, if you have any other local record store memorabilia, I want to know about it, as I collect such stuff! Stickers, badges, buttons, accessories are all game! I even have some old Harmony House newsletters around here somewhere! So feel free to share any and all remembrances and/or memorabilia from your collections, too!

My memory is crap. Always has been and not getting better with age. @prime minister , could we move this thread over to the SMAC forum. Seems like a more logical place for this. Seems to me it's been discussed before.

@vinyl master are you a member of SMAC, not making a connection.

Sorry if I haven’t made the connection…I’m a big vintage audio obsessivist and music/general history buff of sorts…Been that way for years! I know of MARC, the Michigan Antique Radio Club, as I’ve met a few of the members at The Vintage Electronics Expos over the years, but I’m not as familiar with SMAC as I should be…Maybe you guys can tell me more about it…Then again, it’s been a minute since I’ve logged on here, as some more pressing issues have been front and center lately…Still, being a fan of local music and retail history, as well, there are plenty of places I remember from the good ol’ days of record collecting and hi-fi heaven…And would love to discuss more of the local history with you guys…

By the way, if you feel this thread deserves to be in a different place here, feel free to move it to a more preferred location…

My memory is awful. I remember going to Sam’s Jams and Harmony House. Having grown up in Warren, I did not make many trips to Lakeside Mall at that time (1970s). Couldn’t understand why they built a mall way out there 😂. Our mall of choice was Universal City.

Was that not the mall that started with Woolworth’s, Federal’s and Montgomery Ward’s? I remember going to the Cinemark 16 movie theater there to watch the cheap flicks with a few friends in the late 90’s and early 2000’s…

Speaking of Montgomery Ward’s, I remember going in there and seeing the high prices on their Panasonic all-in-one stereo systems…and laughing! Of course, I still didn’t know better when I bought a Sony turntable (A PSLX-250H) and a couple of Panasonic boomboxes at ABC Warehouse later in my teens…I remember when ABC Warehouse had a home theater/stereo room where you could audition equipment, too…Funny thing is that I STILL have the turntable, which I paid full price for…and the boomboxes, but rarely ever use them for anything…But, I’m a collector and I hate to throw anything away…In contrast, I’ve bought turntables for $40.00-50.00 used…and they get more play than what I paid full price for! For the record, the Sony was the ONLY one I EVER paid full price for…and that was back before the vintage audio bug bit me…However, I also still have this $10.00 Value Village thrift store-picked Technics SA-101 receiver from my youth, so I must’ve had SOME eye for quality back then…

Growing up in Port Huron. We made the trek to Lakeside and visited the records stores there. Not sure if I ever bought anything there though. I could usually get it locally. There were so many other stores to check out there with things that you did not find in PoHo.

In Port Huron we had Full Moon records. I also bought some at Neil's stereo, Ben's Appliance, Ben Franklin's and of course K-Mart or Kresge's. There were a few second hand places I would frequent and of course there were the Columbia House deals.

This was before I made real money, worked for not much more than minimum wage, and really didn't have a lot of money to spend on music. Joined the Navy and was away from the 84 to 94. Due to their size and having to move every couple years I mostly ditched LP's and switched to tapes until about 89 when I got my first CD player.

When I got out the Navy because of the Job I had Flint was centrally located for field service. I mainly shopped for music at Harmony House, Best Buy, or Borders. Did a lot of downloading Napster days. Picked up a lot of CD's at Pawn shops and Jelly Beans, a local second hand music store.

2000 working out of the house pulled old equipment out the attic and set up a turntable. Started hitting thrifts and estate sales. Mid to late 2000 was buying Ebay and Fledging Online Vinyl retailers.

Nice! Port Huron is one of my favorite Michigan towns ever! Why, might you ask? It’s because I can ride the 10 cent trolley around town to see the sights, hang out at the Fort Gratiot Lighthouse and Lighthouse Park with a lunch courtesy of Palms Krystal Bar (Just thinking of that “Chicken In The Rough” now!), check out a flick at Sperry’s Movie House, visit the Thomas Edison Depot, Huron Lightship and take a cruise on the Huron Lady II…and buy old records at Everything Classic Antiques…or one of my new favorite spots, State Perceptory Records!

Oh…and the Fort Gratiot Goodwill is where I’ve found some of my best finds! Just curious, but have I missed anything? If there are any other places I need to know, let me know about them…I like to go up to Port Huron in the summers, so I could use a few recommendations!

I can see the attraction. However living there is another story. It's got its problems. Honestly I don't go over all that much. One time since my mom passed 2 years ago. Next time I go over will probably be for a SMAC meet at Ken's.

I don't know if anyone addressed you query regarding SMAC. Southeast Michigan Audio Club is a collection of degenerate low-lifes (and others) that get together once a month or thereabouts for listening to someone's "kit", usually but not always in their home. Once in a while someone will host in a clubhouse or the equivalent. Along with the listening, there is often lunch or snacks, alcohol consumption and a variety of burning of materials close to faces. Some have all analog systems, some mixed and more and more are HT systems. Always good music. Sometimes "satellite" groups spin off as well. There is always a fair amount of horse-trading going on somewhere. You can subscribe to our email list here I think.

Oh…and you guys had the absolute BEST sandwich shop in the State! I’ve literally tried them all…I’ve had the best fish fry ever at the Swallows Inn in Rapid River, near Escanaba…Been to Fitzgerald’s in Eagle Harbor and the Harbor Haus in Copper Harbor…Had a good whitefish chowder in Mackinaw City’s Scalawags and then, the Dogpatch in Munising…I’ve had great sandwiches in Leland’s Fishtown…Village Cheese Shanty…Tasted the chicken at The Bavarian Inn and Zehnder’s in Frankenmuth…Had a great buffalo meatloaf at The White Horse Inn in Metamora and a turkey dinner at Camp Ticonderoga in Troy…Been to Win Schuler’s in Marshall and The Windmill, which is to die for, in Holland! I’ve been to the House Of Flavors in Ludington (They even decorate the place with old 45 rpm records!) for the real Blue Moon ice cream and a lunch, Clementine’s in South Haven in the old bank building, and the Crow’s Nest in Kalamazoo, along with the Root Beer Stands out there…If it’s an iconic restaurant, dive or diner in Michigan, I’ve most likely been there, as I’ve gotten to travel this great state quite extensively! However, on Military by Water Street, PoHo had the best sandwich shop with Moe’s Corner Deli! It lasted five years (the owner had to close due to family health issues), but I’d been there several times while it was open and each time was a winner! A sandwich with a Sprecher’s, either Root Beer or Orange Cream soda! And I literally DREAM of that damn Soul Sauce they put on everything! I loved it so much, I spent $5.00 for a spare condiment bottle filled with the stuff! I was so bummed when I ran out…and even more bummed when they closed! I wish it was still there, but I’ll always have some good memories of the place…and I haven’t found a restaurant…yet…to best it! I will say this…I’m sure PoHo has had it’s problems, as a lot of cities do (I’ll say this…It’s no Flint, Battle Creek or Jackson) but I also know that for us suburbanites or city dwellers, it’s a great escape to some fine parks and beaches in the summertime…and not that far to go, if you’re from the Detroit area…Plus, it seems like there’s a concert going on somewhere all summer long there! I’ll also vouch for Palmer Park in St. Clair and the great fireworks show they put on over the river in July…Another one of my favorite spots! I can also vouch for the Voyageur Restaurant and Murphy’s Inn there! So a great area to visit if you’re from Southeast Michigan and haven’t been there!

Yep, that’s the one. At 12 Mile and Dequindre. It had a tile mural of a galaxy, hence the name Universal City.

Thanks for the clarification, Wntrmute2…I’ll have to look into it more…Right now, though, the winter project list is beyond insufferable, so I’ve been focused on a million other tasks, but it sounds like fun…In any case, might you be the same one from our “other” hangout over at VE?

In any case, if any of you guys have any more vintage remembrances from back in the day, esp. in regards to stereo equipment or records, feel free to share them! Of course, ANY remembrances are good! Who frequented Best Buy and Circuit City for music and equipment? Who attended a “Midnight Madness” sale at Fretter’s…or got a good deal on stereo equipment or a TV at Highland Appliance back in the day? You know…Back in the days when Columbia House advertised in all the latest magazines and there were ads on TV from K-Tel, Sessions and Heartland Music for CD’s, records and tapes? Who bought stuff at Federal’s or E.J. Korvette’s? Who remembers Wrigley’s, Cunningham’s, Chatham, Pak N’ Save, Great Scott, A&P, Farmer Jack, Circus World, Perry Drugs, Arbor Drugs or Sander’s Ice Cream Parlors? Who dined at The Sweden House back in the day? My memory goes way back, so hopefully, I’ve jogged some of yours!

What no Junction Bouy in Marysville?

Just curious, but have any of you ever bought records in a Kroger (Or was it Great Scott?) parking lot? I remember one time, a couple of teens were trying to raise money and were selling records cheaply…There were two titles available…Eddie Rabbitt’s “Horizon” and Elton John’s “Victim Of Love”…My mom wanted the Elton John and I opted for the Eddie Rabbitt…My dad got me into all the classic country and since “I Love A Rainy Night” and “Drivin’ My Life Away” are still classics, I think I made the better choice! Never had that happen again, but it was a cool thing at the time…

What no Junction Bouy in Marysville?
OK, now I have a new one to check out! In return, I recommend Anita’s Riverfront Grille in Marine City for a pizza, outdoors on the patio by the river in the summertime…You won’t be disappointed!

Oh…and I have eaten in Marysville…I have fond memories of Long John Silver’s as a kid…and the only place I could find them was up your way in Marysville…and Fort Gratiot…So, I went there last year…and the hush puppies, fish and chicken were just like I remembered it!

Of course, speaking of fish, who remembers Arthur Treacher’s and Seafood Bay? How about the iconic Top Hat hamburgers? Or the still-existing Bray’s in Hazel Park, Hunter House in Birmingham or Tel-Way on Telegraph?
