Well, everybody, it's time we got this rolling. With the blessing of the Prime Minister, we are holding a Secret Santa, this year. "What is this all about?", you ask. Let me tell you:

If you want to get in on the Secret Santa, sign up in this thread by 11:59 p.m., November 15th (Edited to extend window). Then, please send me a PM with your screen name, real name, shipping address, phone, and email address. Other than phone, the rest of the information will be provided to your Secret Santa, who will use that info to send you your gift. The phone number is in case of untoward events. Let's keep it to $50 USD, maximum, plus shipping. email is provided for those persons who want to send a gift certificate, or some such item. I won't be taking notice of country of residence of recipients, as the match is fully blind, via an Excel spreadsheet, and random.org, for random number generation. If your recipient is in another country, there are lots of ways to shop domestically, via amazon's country page, or online shopping with retailers located there, which avoids shipping delays and customs problems.

I will send out the names no later than November 17th, though probably on the 16th. then you can research your recipient, come up with a gift idea, and shop for it. Try to avoid having something drop-shipped to your house from, say, China, for example, with the hopes of re-sending it to your recipient. That is fraught with peril of delivery failure before Christmas. When your gift is on its way to your recipient, please pm me that your gift has been sent. That way I can track that everything is running as hoped for.

When your gift arrives, you have the choice of opening on arrival, or waiting until your usual gift opening, according to your family tradition. (I hate waiting!) Then you can post up that your gift has arrived, so that your Secret Santa knows that it got there safely. If it did not, for some reason, please let me know, in the conversation thread in which you previously sent your info, so that arrangements can be made.

So, all Secret Santas, and Harry Hannukahs, (and Krampuses. Krampi?) will have sent and received a gift before Christmas, if all goes as planned.

That's how it works.

If you are interested, post up here, with that interest, and send me a PM with your info. Most important of all, have fun with it, everybody.

sorry to post this here, but the oringal topic is closed. i'm still not really clear on how this would work. people just buying things online and having them sent to others? it seems that for the most part we would better choose, say a record, for ourselves than have someone else who may not know us very well do the choosin'. and if they do know us well, we might already have that record. when the secret santa topic was first raised, i thought it might be me sending an unused cartridge from my stash to someone, and someone sending me their extra record clamp. etc. more like a swap.

@Ernie as you are running this show, what's your take on how it will work?

thanks!

You don't have to buy online, but it often works out that way, depending on distance and availability. It doesn't have to be audio-related, but it certainly can be. The idea is that you research your recipient's posts, and come up with a gift idea. Then buy and ship, in whatever way works for you.

I've done this elsewhere, and some of my most treasured gifts were from creative people who learned something about me, from their reading, and then sent me something interesting. I did get something from someone's stash, once. An Oscar Peterson record, one that sent me on a mission that only got completed this year, when I found a new box set of OP records, "Exclusively for my Friends", from annual house concerts in Germany. I've gotten hand-made items, audio-, and not. Even some dry rub of the sender's own recipe. Yum. 😋

Your suggestion about the unused cartridge certainly could work, if you determined that it would be something the recipient probably would like to try. Regarding sending a record, if you find some 'off the beaten path' recording that fits with what you learn about their taste, then that might work. There is always a bit of risk in this whole gift-giving idea.

You do have to keep an open mind, in this process, but the main idea is to have some fun with it.

If you decide to join us, and I hope you do, please post up with your intent, here, and don't forget to send your info to me, via conversation.
Thanks for thinking about this.

We are 7 so far, and some of you owe me a pm with your info.

Any other takers? Questions?

Folks, here's a last call for the Secret Santa Draw. Post here, to sign-up. The deadline has been extended until Wednesday, Nov. 15th, 11:59 p.m. We'd love to have a few more people join in the fun. It's been a big success over yonder so, don't be shy, jump in; the water's fine.
