Fleetwood Mac - Rumours - Any good pressings out there?

I debated whether to post this in Music or Analogue and here it is. I don't play Rumours all that often, but when I do the sound quality is always a major disappointment. I havr two pressing, one Canadian, the other UK and both are dull, a bit wooly and shallow. I didn't notice it quite so much on the system I had when I bought the LP in '77, but I sure do now. Any chance there are some really good reissue pressings anyone has experienced? The original recordings cannot be this dull, surely?

I have two older pressings. I believe one is an original, or close to it, and the other is an 80's pressing. The original sounds decent, and the 80's pressing sounds extremely dull and strange. I don't think either of them compares to my Hoffman/Gray 33 reissue. I would try to find one of those if you can. You have to be careful, though, I believe it's only the one that has "Pressed at Pallas" on the sticker.

Bruce, for all the money and time that was spent on the recording of the Rumours album, it was very poorly recorded. I have 2 copies of the same Jacksonville pressing. One was purchased by my wife in May of 1977, shortly after she attended Fleetwood Mac's concert. It sounds pretty dreadful. That may be due to the fact that my wife played it a lot when she bought it. I have another copy of the same pressing which I bought used more recently and it sounds considerably better although the quality of the mix is the same. I actually like the previous self titled album much more. The recording quality is much better. However, I went through about 5 different copies/pressings, none of which sounded very good. I finally bought a current re-issue and it sounds quite good. Based on that, I would recommend if you really like the album, buy one of the new re-issues.

A good many years ago a friend of mine in NJ played his Nautilus SuperDisc reissue of Rumours for me and I remember thinking it sounded great.

Yeah, that's still the go-to here. It sounds pretty good to me.
That said -- I recently bought a copy on SACD. I am just sayin'.

That too sounds great, though it isn't a true DSD transfer from the master tape, it was upsampled from the superb 24/96 PCM tape transfer done in 2001 for the DVD-Audio release, and as such contains the bonus track Silver Springs.

I also really like the 2004 Redbook CD reissue culled from that same digital transfer but with Redbook specific mastering. There is also a 2011 Rhino Records FLAC download reissue at 24/96, said to be different and superior mastering (with no bonus track). I've so far managed not to buy that one, but I've heard rumors it is the definitive digital version.

If you want the ultimate sounding Rumours, then this is, far and away, the one to get. The one I have is the single lip version, but the double is a notch better. If you want to impress you non audiophile friends as to why you deal with an outdated medium, just play Chains. After they pick their jaws up. They will get it.

I remember some confusion and controversy with that one, there were both 33 1/3 and 45 RPM versions, and not all were pressed at Pallas. Some people said they got a shitty pressing, while others thought they got the Holy Grail. In the end it turned out only the Pallas pressed version was actually treasure?

The Hoffman pressing of a few years ago is brilliant. One of the best sounding records I own.
Hoffmann - yeah, I can see Steve doing a super job with the tracks. When I listen to my Canadian pressing I can hear some worthwhile effort hiding in the mush so I'm sure there were some good track to work with. I guess I'll have to try to track that one down. I don't think I need to go all crazy on 45 RPM. For me it would be probably overkill for 70s pop.

I bought the single disc version from HMV on Yonge Street way back when for $25. The two lp set was $45 iirc. I’m not huge fan of swapping sides every 2 tracks, so I went with the cheaper one.
Btw, I forgot to mention that working in partnership with Hoffman was Kevin Grey. It just doesn’t get any better then those two guys.

I'll have to start a hunt. Ya know, the vast majority of my LPs sound really good on the system I have these days - some much better than I imagined they might, but here a very small number just don't. Rumours is an LP of lots of energy and the pressings I've got just suck it all out. I had a CD as well and it was amazingly even worse. It got one play and was given away to a thrift - kinda felt sorry for someone as I did it, too.

I bought a CD back in 2013 or so that had a bunch of bonus material that sounded good to me. I also have the 45rpm reissue and it too sounds great ...but... I hate getting up to flip it so often and don't know why I keep doing this to myself for a small uptick in sound quality that has become almost entirely irrelevant to me :)

I have a Mo-Fi pressing of "FM-FM" that sounds great and much better than the Reprise copy it replaced. I still have my original pressing of Rumours, but radio over-played it to death. My brother bought the reissue of it several years ago, but it still didn't feed the kitty 4 me.

That must have been the original CD release, and yes it was terrible as were nearly all Warner CDs of that era. If you spot the now out of print 2004 CD reissue someplace, don't be afraid to grab that one (it was a 2-disc set with bonus material), it will get you 90% of what the DVD-Audio or subsequent SACD provides, assuming a competent Redbook CD player does the spin, really quite good.

There are also 2013 remastered 3 and 4-CD deluxe editions, I've never heard those and don't know if they are really any different than the 2004 reissue or not other than the expanded content.

Yah, mine was one of the first-generation CD releases and man, most of them were horrendous!

Really kind of surprising the format got off the ground as well as it did, given the horrendous sound of most CDs back then. Forget about whether your disc player was any good, it hardly mattered when the discs themselves really just sucked. It took quite a few years years for that to change.
