These are one of my favorite quarry with artificial baits. Its been at least 10 years since I've been fishing though.
They're called a Spotted Bay Bass (most commonly known as), or, Spotted Sand Bass (technically correct).
Theyre toothy devils, and a day of lipping them leaves you with a raw thumb. They're also spiny devils, with spines at all fin points, and a razor blade gill cover.
In this pic, he is in lockjaw, which causes his gill plates to flare open, exposing the razor blade at the outer edge of the gill plate, just above the fins; sort of a spotted triangle point.
Everyone that chases them calls them Spotties. They range from palm size, to around 6lbs, and, are quite like freshwater bass for habitat and structure. We pitched, jigged, etc., all very active presentations.
I used 1/8oz to 1/4oz leadheads, depending on the tidal movements, and depth of structure (can be as much as 30' deep), on 6lb line.
I'd finish the jig heads myself, by painting them as blue on the bottom half of the jig head, and green on the top half. That imiated the colorations of the minnows, which had blue camo' to match the sky when viewed from below, and green algae bottom color from above. After I painted the jig heads, I dipped them in clear epoxy that was loaded with fine stripper glitter, to give them irridescence.
The jig bodies were store bought, 2.5" long shad bodies, in natural bait matching colors.
yep, I love active pursuit.
