frugel-horn flat pack; what do you think?

The amounts of stuffing has very noticeable effect also.
You may try adding / subtracting and see.
I was surprised by the difference with mine and intend to revisit once again when I
what would be the recipe for taming boomy bass? more stuffing or less? you can see from my pics how much is in there.

This my build, but each driver needs a different amount. I used a Fostex driver

another question: the alpair 7.3 has a "cap" that goes on the back of the driver that is removable.

this pic shows the cover (on the right with red label):

This is what MA says about it:
"The rear magnet cover can be removed. The covers magnetic attraction keeps it attached to the main driver body. Simply pull away from the driverʼs main body, no tools are needed to do this job. Removal help those box makers who design shallow cabinets or wish to optimise internal box volumes. The performance change with the cover removed is small, so the installation choices for the end user is optimal."

I have the covers on right now but could take them off. I wonder if that would affect the bass quality.

so here is the dilemma: it has been almost a week since i switched to the alpairs. they are still boomy. i switched to a bigger amp and pulled them out from the wall and away from the aiko horns, but neither solved the problem.

i could add more stuffing but, because the cabinets are sealed up, i can add more stuffing via the opening for the drivers but it might be hard to get it back out if the additional stuffing doesn't solve the problem/makes it worse.

in addition, the cabinets sounded great with the CHBs and adding stuffing might make them sound worse.

thoughts?

Is your room treated?
Good question. It’s my smallish master bedroom so no (good thing I’m single). I suppose I could try small diffusers behind the cabinets.

I did move them even further away from the wall and that has helped. Will see if that makes enough of a difference.

Well, aside for the boominess, how do you compare the sound between the MA and the Coral?

I do think the boominess can be tamed with placement or treatments. There was a site called foam factory or something that had some nicely priced absorption products for relatively cheap.

Here’s a crazy thought: why not stick with drivers that need the bass reinforcement of the rear horn? The CHB works with your SE amp and it sounds like it will be easier to enhance the bass you are getting than to control the excess bass of the MA.

A rear-loaded horn is a comparatively elaborate way to reinforce the bass of the driver. The MA may be happier in the Pensil cabinet. While it may be true that the FH3 was designed with the Alpair 7.3 in mind, it may not be the best enclosure for this driver. By the same token, while the FH3 was designed to suit the Alpair 7.3, the Alpair may not be the best driver for the cabinet.

I would also posit that it may not be practical to tune the cabinet for more than one driver due to the cabinet design and construction. This is particularly true in your case where one driver wants more bass and another driver wants less.

Given the CHB’s characteristics, I would consider 70hz - 12khz to be a resounding success. If you want deeper bass (not just more mid bass) then you really will need to augment the low end. If you added subwoofers, you would probably want to extend the high end as well with super tweeters if you wanted to retain a balanced sound.

Except for the boomy bottom end (now a bit reduced) the alpairs have a fuller sound—more balanced. However, the corals have a really nice mid to HF presentation. More air/separation of instruments.

I’m in a Facebook groupwhere there has been a bunch of discussion re absorption panels. Will see if there is

that may be where i end up. i have a nice 8" mirage sub that could fill in the CHB bottom end.

here is a relevant thread in diyaudio comparing alpair 7.3s in frugalhorns and pensils:
in post #3 dave says, re FH/alpair 7.3 combo: "Leave the damping out below the driver in the front part and you may find too much bass even pulled out from the wall." That is spot on.
post#28 says the poster has his FHs 2 feet away from the wall! i don't have that kind of room in the bedroom these speakers are living in.

the consensus (and dave's view) is the FH is a better cabinet for the 7.3 than the pensil.

I wonder if there is a way i could place some cotton batting in a mesh envelope that i could slide into the the front chamber in the frugalhorn and then fish it back out if i want to use the CHBs. @StevenZ 's room treatment idea could also work; a diffusion panel behind the cabinets could tame the bass.

You are thinking along the right lines with adding stuffing.
Go buy some ladies panty hose and stuff some fiber in , you can get creative with Velcro just behind the driver to hold it in place yet make it removable.

love the panty hose idea! i can get cotton batting at joannes. OK, will try that. thanks!

Would just buying a few cheap pillows from Walmart and putting them at the port reduce the bass output any? Typically they’re pretty well filled and only $3 a pop or something like that. Just thinking out loud
