FX Audio Tube-01 Buffer/Preamp

Old thread but new use for the FX-01. Paired with a YJ TPA3116 amp driving Axiom outdoor speakers and Marcato sub on the screened porch. The FX's extra gain is a blessing with the YJ board amp. Streaming Amazon on the porch through an Echo Input with my honey as the sun goes down makes SIP enjoyable. A few glasses a wine also helps.

Glad to hear that it worked for you too, Poultrygeist. What tubes have you settled on?

BTW, that is one beautiful power amp. The quality build is evident. When I retire, I'm going to have to experiment with a few DIY components and would love to learn more about it.

PS: I love the "joy stick" on the front. It must provide fader, tone, balance, speaker A/speaker B controls. No?

I've tried several but the Voskhods sound the best to me.

Thanks for the compliment on the "Glass" D amp. One guy on AK said it looked like an amp in a drawer. :)

The toggle is just an on/off switch.

Are the Voskhods the stock tubes it came with? I’m running GE JAN tubes in both my Little Bear and FX-01. I’m sure there are better.

I was just kidding on the “joy stick” comment but the toggle and plate cover you picked are a simple, elegant choice. Particularly if the toggle makes a satisfying and definitive “click”.

Are there plans for your amp that are readily available?

The Voskhods are Russian tubes and very inexpensive on ebay. But shipping takes a long time.

No plans. You just buy the YJ Blue Black amp board on ebay for around $10 to $15 plus a 12-24v power supply put it in a case, make some connections and you're good to go. Here's a link to a thread I started some years ago on the TPA 3116 amps.

To get the most from the FX requires tube upgrades and a linear regulated power supply like the Astron pictured here. Otherwise the sound is rather uninspiring. Paired with a Volt+D you get a very affordable system ( under $200 ) that has outstanding resolution. I have better SET amps but none any more enjoyable and engaging than this system driving full range single driver speakers. The FX has too much gain which is remedied with a lower volume setting on the Volt+D. I recently compared it to my new SMSL DA-9 ( $250 vs $129 ) and prefer the +D.

Why the TV? I'm able to stream Amazon Music HD using an HDMI audio extractor removing the digital signal from a Fire Stick 4K and sending it to a Topping DAC which converts and feeds the FX. If you look closely you can see the hi res signal on both screens.
