Garrard 301- preferred rebuilder? Tonearm?

I have fixed the counterweight rubber before. I'd like to get my first 3012 rewired and get rid of that funky SME connector. Sentimental value.
Rewiring is beyond my skillset but well within Serge's as @Redboy suggested.👍
Then I realized, that I have another 3012 rebuilt by Luigi Andreoli with silver cables and such for the SPU he redid for me.
I wanna hear that Andreoli SME 3012/SPU combo some day.😊
I have way too many tonearms. Not as many as JE but he's a professional.
Nah, just an over enthusiastic amateur.😆

"Esoteric denim."

Boy i feel lucky to have missed some wacky shit.
Oh, it's still ongoing.

There's a whole town I saw in Japan - Kojima - where people go high-browing about $1000, $2000... or more... pairs of jeans. "Ahhhh but you see Soanso-san has been making jeans for 80 years by hand every day, can't you see his arthritic hands? He stitched these jeans together one thread at a time without ever touching a sewing machine. Truly, this denim contains the soul of a dying age."

These companies often make a whole range of jeans, they just offer some special-editions for those who worship at the altar of Veblen and pocket the fool's money gladly. This kind of dandyism is in most every hobby, I guess.

I had the SPU at the DC show you attended but haven't used the arm since Texas.

Got a board cut for a 3012? I'll lend it to you next time we meet up. It's fitted with a heavy counterweight for SPUs (no sagging jokes, now Esmilla!)

But if you want to sew your own, plenty of choices here:

I've bought some small pieces of fabric from them before.

I haven't fired up the sewing machine yet though!

Greg Metz will be painting the table Harley Davidson Black to match the McIntosh gear. I will also be switching to black labels. While I get some parts from CTC ordered, does anyone feel any of the various platters offered are a significant upgrade?

I also received this response from Thomas Schick regarding the banana tonearm:

Hello Jackson,

thank you. I guess Hifi Haven is the place for many tube, vintage, horns DIYers these days?

the banana version is the same geometry and dimensions like my 12 inch arm.

The sound is not any different from the J shaped tonearm.
Same materials, geometry .
The arm tube is damped with three different materials in 9 sections, in any tonearm 9 to 12 in any shape or color.
That is often overlooked or not known .

There is a special version of the banana like it played in Vienna.

It is the 12 banana shape tonearm tube, Smoke Chrome arm parts, van den Hul silver cable.

Best
Thomas

I replied this morning asking about the special version as well as a photo. I’ll append it here when I get it.

Thomas sent these pictures for me to post. They are of the tonearm he had in Vienna with the smoked chrome. He also added some more information about what’s going on lately. I quite like this arm. I’m between this and rebuilding an EMT 997.

Hello Jackson,

In the US the tonearms are available through MOFI distribution.

If you buy it in the EU, you can get it from me directly.

The smoked chrome banana version is limited to 25 pieces.

They come with van den Hul silver 501 cable and a hedshell with silver leads.

Also with a headshell with silver leads.

The set costs 2900 Euro.

I have moved to a large building in Bulgaria.

There I have the possibility to make the tonearms, work on record players and speaker systems.

Among some planar and dynamic speakers I have my 4 way big horn system set up here. Compression driver from 100 Hz.

Also the full range and Klangfilm replicas.

All of which is not known to the public due to the move.

Best

Thomas

I went with the NOS EMT 997 arm that had been on eBay etc for some time. I found the original listing on Japanese Yahoo and bought it with a proxy. Total cost was $2200. A lot less than the $3.5-4k the scalpers on eBay were trying to get! https://www.fromjapan.co.jp/japan/en/auction/yahoo/input/n1221178609/

I am shipping it off to Romain Kroehling at EMT Service. Hopefully if our schedules line up I will be able to pick it up from him outside Basel in person in July!

Personally I’d ship it to Ray at CTC before Woodsong….but I’ve had a long term relationship with CTC/Ray so I’m biased ;)

Jim has a great reputation, and from everything I’ve heard his prices aren’t outrageous…
I've used both and would say the opposite!

Picked up an EMT SUT and TSD15 cart from the remains of EMT in Lahr, it’s on the way to Florida now.

Update on the chassis. It has been painted, new tags riveted!
