Good morning from Cape Town, South Africa

Good day fellow audiophiles and music lovers

So good to see a well represented forum about this hobby

I am a retired electronic security business owner. I think my hi-fi journey started in about 1964 when as a teenager I used to baby-sit for neighbours. One neighbour referred me to another just around the corner where I lived. When I walked in his front door, I heard the most glorious sound of Mozart coming from his stereo system. I could not believe my ears that reproduced music could sound so good

Of course to achieve that for myself required money, but being an avid DIYer like my father I got hold of Gilbert Briggs book "Loudspeakers" which contained plans of how to build enclosures. I actually met my wife after I had acquired some quite large speakers, so she knew what was in store

During the years I have been a member of the Cape Town Hi-Fi Club and I produce their monthly newsletter. Covid has temporarily (we hope) put paid to social meetings so for the time being we interview people in the business via ZOOM, which at least enables us to keep in touch

I suppose I should mention what I am using now to listen to music

The actual music is stored on a computer which uses JRiver as a media server. Then there is a Lindemann Limetree Bridge, a Devialet 220, a pair of Eminent Technology LFB8bs and a B&W DB1 sub. The music on the Lindemann is controlled by an app on an iPad. I am very happy with the results and have managed not to spend any more money for a while

Originally from England, we live in Cape Town in the Western Cape of South Africa. It is a very picturesque part of the country, having a Mediterranean climate, many wine farms and amazing mountains and beautiful scenery

Regards
Chris

Hello and welcome. And I'll be the first to ask. Photos of your system?
Also if you're so inclined, I would love to see some photos of your region of the country. It sounds beautiful.
You'll find a Darkroom forum for photographs that we share.

Welcome to The Haven Chris! There is some good climbing down there too from what Ive gathered.

Welcome, Chris! I too am looking forward to some photos... :)

Did you happen to know my late friend Andre Hanekom, also from Cape Town? I never had the chance to meet him in person, but we corresponded quite a bit over the years about all sorts of cool audio ideas.

I'd like to see a few pictures of the scenery as well as the usual system photos.

Yes I knew Andre quite well. He lived about 10 mins from me in Kenilworth. He had a superb workshop and could turn out the most intricate phono cartridges. I must have gone there at least 50 times

He also had a daschund called Judy. Ours is called Harriet. When his wife died, he went downhill and passed away after about a year.

He has the most objectional relatives you can imagine. He and his brother were not on speaking terms. Its going on 3.5 years since he died and the house still has not been sorted out. No-one can agree on anything

Here is Andre at some Hi-Fi Club meetings

Some pics of Cape Town. I cannot see the "Darkroom" so if they need to be moved there, a moderator can do it

Welcome! I’m jealous of your surroundings but happy to have you here. I’ve spent a little over two weeks in Capetown and have to say that it’s the most picturesque place I’ve ever been to. And I hung out with penguins on the most surreal beach. Go for a stroll for me, the Midwest of the US is very dull from a nature standpoint

Oh yes, I forgot. Boulders Beach in Simon's Town. About 30 mins drive for us. A big tourist spot today. The penguins are very tame and just ignore humans and carry on with their business

There is a documentary on Netflix "Penguin Town" which is very accurate

Beautiful scenery ! I've had Rust En Vrede wine before, a red blend, and it was excellent.

Edit: Welcome aboard !

My wife was watching Penguin Town the other day and lit up when I walked in the room and said "Oh, I know that place, I've been there." She LOVES penguins. And yes, they're very tame. I sat on a rock with one for about ten minutes just staring at the ocean, and took this photo of it as he (she?) eventually walked away.

Just a magical place. And the wine you all have is mmmmmmm. Good stuff.
