Greetings from Ohio

Hello all,

I ran across HiFi Haven while searching on the Altec 32 horn. I was pretty impressed, so I decided to join.

My musical journey started at the age of 9 when I picked up the violin. I played through college but it was not my focus, just for enjoyment. I have always had a small system to listen to, but nothing all that great. Nobody in my family or friends was into it, so it was hard to learn what to look for.

Fast forward to about 5 years ago I got a pair of B&W 685 series 2 speakers to improve on the sound of my system and they rekindled things for me. I worked on improving the sound with them. I was interested in a tube amp, having had a positive experience with owning a Fender Deluxe Reverb from 1966. I went in a vintage shop a couple of years ago while looking for a McIntosh amp/pre to mate with my speakers and managed to hear a pair of MC30’s with an Altec VOTT A5. I haven’t been able to get that sound out of my head since. Diana Krall over the A5’s. Wow.

Last fall I came into a pair of Altec La Paz (601z). Both of the diaphragms were intact. That was the start of the insanity. The next step was to find a tube amp. I ended up with a used Decware SE84 C+. It has a broken volume control (that I haven’t fixed yet), so I am temporarily using a Carver integrated as a pre. I also have a pair of EV Marquis from @ 1958 I believe (three way). They do ok, but can’t keep up with the Altec 601.

I am collecting Altec components for a build like JE’s with the Altec 32 to try. I have a metal pair of 32 and a pair of 808-8a so far. The 808’s have the symbiotiks in them still. I figured I would start there and see where it lead me. My current plan is to go with 414’s in 8 ohm. It will probably be a while (year) as we are currently building a house. When the house is built, my power tools will become available.

My taste in music is pretty eclectic. Jazz is my biggest interest, followed by rock. My sources are CDs and Vinyl.

I look forward to learning from you all and hopefully make some new friends along the way.

Cheers,
Andy

Sounds like some fun gear, and you’ve already noticed that HFH is full of people who will encourage your obsessions!

There’s a few fellow Ohioans here. I’m in Dayton (and working on a 604-8G project).

John,

Great to hear of other Ohioans here. I am in Columbus. I’d love to see some pics of your 604 project. I have looked at those and wondered. I have never heard 604s, but are the big brother to my 601s.

No experience with the 8 ohm 414, but as long as it’s alnico, it should still be ok.
BTW, welcome to HFH! 😊

Yes, thinking the 414 will be similar to my 601z. Thanks for the inspiration. I am sure I will have questions along the way.

Welcome, @kman! Look forward to seeing the jazz recordings you are playing through your system.
Bill Evans- New Jazz Conceptions and Hank Mobley- Soul Station (Blue Note Classic series) last night. Wife put me to work today. I have been impressed so far with the Blue Note classic series.

Welcome to The Haven Andy and thanks for sharing! Nice path and future goodies to look forward to! I have *seen* one pair of Altecs (real big ones) and was at a loss for words. I think they are so cool and no doubt they sound fantastic. I hope to hear some sometime. I am also very happy to learn of another Havenite from Columbus. I am near the zoo, lets meet up sometime!

Thanks Thin ice. I am on the northeast side now, but moving north of the zoo in a year. It would be great to meet you. What are you into (what do you listen to)? What is in your system?

My wife raises her eyebrow when I refer to my Altecs as ”little”. Relatively speaking they are...

Welcome! Lots of Altecing around these parts... I'm working on putting together 8 ohm 414s with some 802g drivers right now - not 32 horns but similar idea. Lots of good people have shared knowledge with me and I've only been around for a few months! Cheers
