Greetings from up north in Minnesota!

Hi all,

Long time listener first time caller here... After years of lurking around a number of the audio forums, I am embarking on a speaker build around a pair of vintage Altec 414A woofers, and I have loved reading the incredible amount of insight related to that specific speaker here on the Haven.

I am based in the Twin Cities area of Minnesota, and I have been into vintage gear since early in my hi fi addiction. Over the years I have really enjoyed reading the work and learning about the systems of Jeff Day, Art Dudley, Joseph (JE Labs), Devon Turnbull (Ojas), and more. I have been very slowly upgrading and tweaking my own system over the course of about 15 years, and here is what it is comprised of today:

TT is an original Rega Planar 3 with a Dynaco 10x5 cartridge. I feel that this combo has always been a great value, and I am grateful to have purchased a 10x5 before they doubled in price...

Preamp is a McIntosh C-28, and amp is a McIntosh MC 225, purchased minty clean out of an estate and both factory restored by Absolute Sounds Labs. I am extremely lucky to have ASL located right here in the Twin Cities. They remain one of the only McIntosh factory-certified shops in the country (in business since the 1960s), and their work is incredible.

Speakers are first generation ADS L810. ADS speakers have been a constant for me over the years, but the Altec bug bit years ago, and I am excited to get to work on my 414A-based 2-way speakers.

Interconnects are Belden 8402/Switchcraft, as inspired by Jeff Day's profile of Shirokazu Yazaki, and speaker cable is Belden 9497.

Looking forward to diving in and meeting more folks here on the Haven!

Michael

Welcome to the Haven Michael, it's great to have you with us.

I recently built a set of two way speakers with 414z drivers, 32c horns and 802-8G HF drivers. The crossover network was courtesy of @je2a3.

I REALLY enjoy these speakers and I think you'r going to be very happy if you follow this or a similar path.

@marantzfan Hello! I have combed through your original thread countless times now, along with all the JE Labs blog posts on the 753 style build, and they were a big inspiration in choosing the 414. I may have the opportunity to purchase a set of 32-style horns out of a Model 15, so my fingers are crossed!

Having done the 753-style build, I'm certainly not disappointed. :)
