Happy 90th Birthday, Willie Nelson

Speaking of whom...

Makin' Keith Richard(s) look like a spring chicken, ain't he?

I love Willie. I just listened to Willie and Family live as a remembrance of his 1980 show and then into a rabbit hole of videos, including some from the last two weeks. He’s looking frail and his guitar playing is sketchy, but his voice is unmistakeable as ever, although on a duet with Glen Campbell I was amazed at how similar the two were.

He’s an American treasure for sure and I regret not taking my girls to see him when that all were younger, but they did see BB King. so 1 out of 2 ain’t bad.

I saw the Highwaymen at the Palace of Auburn Hills in what Google tells me was 1990. My girlfriend (wife now) got an invite from an automotive supplier to one of the mid-level suites. This was before I developed the deep appreciation for both Johnny Cash's and Willie Nelson's music I have now. Wish I could go back in time and see the show again. I do remember noticing Willie's guitar playing and being impressed in contrast with the others.

I got on the Willie bandwagon in the late 1970s with the “Outlaws” and “Waylon and Willie” LPs. They got a lot of play. I even saw ”Honeysuckle Rose” when it came out for all the live music in it.

Years ago, my wife bought me an autographed copy of “Willie and Family Live” and it’s hanging on the wall with my Jimmie Vaughn CD I got autographed after he opened for Dylan at Freedom Hill.

I just find his music and voice very entertaining.
