Hello from Eastern Washington

Hi folks and thanks for having me!

I got started in this hobby, shoot, almost 9 years ago when I lived in the Seattle area and decent old gear littered the ground at all the thrift stores. I had a great Craigslist hustle in those days, along with trading up over time - lots of cool stuff. settled on an amp and turn table and sold most everything else when I moved to the eastern side of the state. I've recently been back into audio after a home purchase a couple years back, as the acoustics in the area I had at a previous rental were possibly the worst I've ever heard.

I will preface this with the fact I've had the opportunity to listen to some fairly high end gear at the local hifi shop (Reference Media) when I lived on the westside of the state - I don't have an ear like most folks in this hobby do. I can't notice the finer details when small components or cables are changed in a system, etc. Having realized this, what I'm after is a listening experience where everything sounds "right" and nothing "bothers" me. For me, that means the sound stage is clear and accurate, and there aren't any particular issues that jump out at me and detract from the enjoyment. I am definitely not there yet, particularly in regard to a couple of bass nodes (room), sibilance (speakers), and the stage is a bit hazy (?). I am fully aware everything here is decidedly entry level gear.

I'm currently running a Sansui AU-9900, which is standing in for a Knight KN-775 that is awesome, but in desperate need of a refresh (anyone good with tubes here?). Sources are an old Playstation 1, Dual 1019 with Grado FTE+1, and a Chromecast Audio. I have a Tascam 122 mk ii and 112B that will be going in a rack i have yeat to install in the center of the console, as well. Speakers are some old Advent Legacy's that I refoamed and rebuilt the crossovers a few years back.

Plans are to find someone refresh the Knight amp and sell the Sansui to help fund some Tekton Lore speakers and get some room treatment in. I will be buying a DAC for the Chromecast and a newer rackmount CD transport. I'll have the Dual out for a clean and lube shortly, as well as an old HK 330b that I plan to keep to run some nearfield monitors in my office.

Thanks for having me aboard - I look forward to sticking around for while!

Welcome to The Haven @Airframer :)

Glad you found our little corner of the 'Net. :)

Love your system - I've always had soft spots for the vintage Sansui AU series and the Dual 1019 (still have a 1019 in storage).

Where about in Eastern WA? I lived in Walla Walla from 1987-1993. Someday I'd like to move back there (once the kids are both off in college).

My uncle used to live in Chattaroy until he passed away a few years back. Some of my cousins still live in the area. Beautiful country.

Welcome. Good to see somebody else who's populated a console with gear. I'm still kicking myself 10 years later for passing up an AU-9900 in favor of the MAC-1900 Receiver I bought for $100 more. Those things are purdy.

Welcome @Airframer , liking the Sansui. It was my favorite over kenwood, pioneer and marantz among others (only unseated by a newer mcintosh integrated). AU717 set was fun and the 990 were lookers! I’d love to have AU20000 drop in my lap or similar separates in that same style.

Yep. I always thought these consoles looked great, but how many times can a man open one up only to be greated with "Magnavox - Solid State" and still keep his sanity?

Exactly. Which is why mine now opens up to reveal modern German and Scandinavian gear.

I've seen a lot of consoles and that is a beautiful console. The patterns to the woodwork in front are amazing.

Welcome from a fan of Sansui integrated amps of the 70's. I have a AU-717 that I use every day.

Cheers,

Snade

Thanks, Snade!

Love that series. I regret selling the AU-919 I had, as though I like the 9900's looks, I remember liking the 919 better in regard to sound.

Welcome Airframer! I really like your style, that is a fantastic looking system that Im sure sounds sweeet. Ive got some Advent Heritage that I really like, though yours look noticeably up the ladder from the Heritage. Cheers.
