I got started in this hobby, shoot, almost 9 years ago when I lived in the Seattle area and decent old gear littered the ground at all the thrift stores. I had a great Craigslist hustle in those days, along with trading up over time - lots of cool stuff. settled on an amp and turn table and sold most everything else when I moved to the eastern side of the state. I've recently been back into audio after a home purchase a couple years back, as the acoustics in the area I had at a previous rental were possibly the worst I've ever heard.
I will preface this with the fact I've had the opportunity to listen to some fairly high end gear at the local hifi shop (Reference Media) when I lived on the westside of the state - I don't have an ear like most folks in this hobby do. I can't notice the finer details when small components or cables are changed in a system, etc. Having realized this, what I'm after is a listening experience where everything sounds "right" and nothing "bothers" me. For me, that means the sound stage is clear and accurate, and there aren't any particular issues that jump out at me and detract from the enjoyment. I am definitely not there yet, particularly in regard to a couple of bass nodes (room), sibilance (speakers), and the stage is a bit hazy (?). I am fully aware everything here is decidedly entry level gear.
I'm currently running a Sansui AU-9900, which is standing in for a Knight KN-775 that is awesome, but in desperate need of a refresh (anyone good with tubes here?). Sources are an old Playstation 1, Dual 1019 with Grado FTE+1, and a Chromecast Audio. I have a Tascam 122 mk ii and 112B that will be going in a rack i have yeat to install in the center of the console, as well. Speakers are some old Advent Legacy's that I refoamed and rebuilt the crossovers a few years back.
Plans are to find someone refresh the Knight amp and sell the Sansui to help fund some Tekton Lore speakers and get some room treatment in. I will be buying a DAC for the Chromecast and a newer rackmount CD transport. I'll have the Dual out for a clean and lube shortly, as well as an old HK 330b that I plan to keep to run some nearfield monitors in my office.
