We have added a new feature to our Forum: the chat function. Using this feature, folks can chat with each other, in real time. You can share music while chatting. Once you get used to it, it can be a very similar experience to sitting in your living rooms with friends, listening to music, laughing back and forth, and just having a good time. You can arrange to meet at certain times and/or days, or just join in when you notice folks are chatting.

This thread is intended to let you know how things work, as a couple of the best features are not very intuitive. The following posts will address topics and explanations, hopefully in a manner, adequate to enhance your chatting experience here at the Haven.

Give chat a shot. We think that you will enjoy it. Several of us are already regulars.

How do I access the chat function?

At the top of any forum page, along with the other controls, is a link labelled, "Chat." If no one is in a chat room, there will also be a red "0" in the link. If there are participants in chat, you will see the red "0" turn into a green indication, with the number in green indicating the number of participants.

To access chat, you simply click the "chat" link at the top of any page. If you have not yet "joined" a room, you will be presented with a list of available rooms. each entry in that list will give the user names of folks participating in that room. If you have previously "joined" a room, and did not formally "leave" that room, when you go back in, you will be taken to the last room you were participating in.

If you join a room, you will be considered as a "joined" member of that room, until you formally "leave" it. You will only be shown as "in" the room if you are currently participating in it.

If you stop posting for a threshold period of time (10 minutes), you will be shown as in the room but inactive (status indicator to the right of your username in the participant list will change from green to gray). If you then post something, you will again be shown as active (status indicator returns to green). If you do not post for a longer period (20 minutes), your username will be removed from the list of current participants. If you again begin posting, your username will be returned to the participant list. If you exit chat, without formally "leaving," you will be treated in a similar way to if you stop posting. If you return before the time thresholds, you will be treated as not having left.

You can "join" and actively participate in multiple rooms at the same time. You will only see the posting in the room you are currently open to. The rooms you are currently participating in will be listed at the top of the chat page. The one you are currently viewing will be listed in bold type. Other rooms you are participating in will be listed in non,-bold type.

If a post is made in a room you are not currently viewing, it's name in the room list will flash. You can switch between rooms you are currently participating in by clicking its name, in the list, at the top of the page.

If you want to formally "leave" a room you simply post the following in the text box, and hit "return."

/leave
If you want to formally "leave" all rooms you have joined, simply post the following in the text box, and hit "return."

/logout

Enjoy,

How can I chat while doing other things?

One way to chat, while doing other things with your browser, like moving about in the forum, is to opening chat in a separate tab in your browser. This is a bit unhandy, in that, unless you set up to receive notifications (discussed later in this thread), you will not be aware of activity in chat, unless that tab is open. But you will be able to easily switch back and forth between chat and other browser pages.

A more effective way to chat and do other things at the same time is to open chat in a dedicated popup window. You can then size your browser and the chat popup so they both fit nicely on your screen. You ca now browse freely, while staying up on chat activity.

To open chat in a dedicated popup, enter the char room you wish to participate in, and in the upper right of the chat window, is the "Options" link (looks like 3 horizontal lines. Click that link. In the bottom right of the window that presents is a link labelled "Open in popup." Click that and chat will open in a separate popup. The popup operates slightly different than a window in your browser, and you can size and move the popup as desired. Once the popup is open, you can navigate away from chat in the main browser, or even close you main browser.

Enjoy,

How can I tell who is in the chat room I am currently viewing?

The list of room participants is called the "Chatter List." If chat is open in a browser page/tab, it will occupy the right pane of the window. This pane is displayed by default, but can be hidden, leaving more room for chat post viewing.

To hide the chatter list, click the "Settings" link, at the top right of the chat page (looks like 3 inter-meshed gears). In the window that presents, click "Settings" at the top of the page, then, click the checkbox, under "Miscellaneous," labelled "Hide Chatter List." To re-display the chatter list, uncheck that setting.

If chat is in a dedicated popup, to display the chatter list, click the "users" link, at the top right of the popup (looks like 3 small people). The chatter list will be presented, instead of the the chat post display. To re-present the chat post display, simply click the "User" link again.

Enjoy,

How can I make private statements in a chat room?

Sometimes you might want say something that you only want certain room participants in the room to see. This is called the "whisper" function. You designate who you want to be able to see the post, followed by the text of the post, using this form:

/whisper [username1, username2] Message text

How can I have private conversations in chat?

It is possible to have entirely private conversations with one or more members, in chat. Essentially, a private chat room is created, with most of the normal chat room functionality. You might want to share private information, or simply move a line of communication out of a very active chat room.

There are several ways to initiate a private conversation. You can even seek to initiate such a conversation with a member who is not currently in chat. The room does not fully create until at least 2 members have posted in it.

Once the private chat room is created, it will be listed, along with the other rooms you have "joined," at the top of the chat page. The private room will be named for the username of the member you designated to chat with in private. You can navigate between any room you are participating in, by clicking the title of the room list. As usual, the name of the room you are currently in, will display in bold text. Posts made in rooms you are not currently viewing will cause that rooms name of the room list to flash, until you go there.

More members can be invited into a private chat room. The function is only available from inside that room.

One way to initiate a private conversation with someone currently in chat, is to click that member's name in the chatter list (list of room participants) of the room he/she is in. In the box that then presents, click "Start Private Conversation." The new private room then gets listed at the top of your chat page, named for the other member.

Another way to initiate a private conversation is to click the "Private Conversations" link under the list of "joined" rooms, at the top of the chat page. You then put the username of the intended person in the "Recipient" field, and an initial message post in the "Message" field. Then click "Start private conversation" at the bottom of the form. With this method, you can invite someone who is not currently in chat, and they will receive an alert in the regular forum.

Another way to initiate a private conversation is to post a /msg command, using the text box, with the following format:

/msg username, Message text

To leave a private message, post the following, via the text box:

/leave

If you leave a private chat room, it will remain. You can return to it. If all participants in the private chat room formally "leave," the private room is dissolved, and removed from your room list.

If chat is open in a dedicated popup, in order to re-enter the private room, after having navigated another room, simply click the "Private conversations" link, under the room list at the top of the page, you will then need to click the private room, named for the other participant, to go back into the private room. This can be initially confusing. But, you can be having private conversations in multiple rooms. In a normal browser window, you can simply click the name of the private room directly.

Enjoy,
Rich P

How can I change the color of my posts in chat?

In an active chat room, there can be several lines of conversation going at once. This can make it hard to keep up. One way to make it easier to keep up is for each participant to post in a different color. The default color is black, like the rest of the forum.

You can change the color of your posts, on a post by post basis, using the "Text Color" control, associated with the text box. If not visible, you can click the associated "more" control (3 vertical dots) to expose the control. Compose your message, then select the text you want to color. When you post the message, it will be displayed as formatted, then text color will revert to default.

You can persistently change your chat posting color, by clicking the "Settings" icon, at the top right of the chat page (looks like 3 inter-meshing gears). In teh box that presents, you can change your post color by adjustment of the "Your message color" control, then click "Update."

Enjoy,

Can chat just be part of normal forum pages, instead of having to open a chat page?

Sometimes you might want chat to automatically open, as a field on normal forum pages. That way chat can follow you around, as you move about on the forum. There are several settings you can use to set this up.

You can set your chat display options by going into a chat room. Then click the "Settings" control, at the top right of the chat page. Click "Settings" at the top of the box that presents. At the bottom of the box, set your desired display option, via the "Display mode" control. Here are your options:

  • Default - This causes chat to only be displayed in a dedicated chat page.
  • All Pages - This causes a single line chat field to be presented along the bottom of any forum page.
  • Below breadcrumb - This causes an interactive chat field to be placed under the breadcrumb list, near the top of the page. The breadcrumb list shows you where you are located, relating to the forum-subforum structure
  • Above forum list - This causes an interactive chat field to be placed above the forum list, only on the forum main page.
  • Below the forum list - This causes an interactive chat field to be placed just under the forum list, only on the forum main page
  • Above content - This causes an interactive chat field to be placed just above the page content, on any forum page
  • Below content - This causes an interactive chat field to be place just below the page content on any forum page
  • Sidebar top - This causes a small, interactive chat field to be placed as a small, topmost sidebar, on the right side of the forum main page only
  • Sidebar bottom - This causes a small, interactive chat field to be placed as a small, bottom-most sidebar, on the right side of the forum main page only
Enjoy,

How do I turn audio notifications (bleeps and bloops) on or off?

There are various sounds that can be produced in response to various events in chat: a new post is made, someone enters or exits the room, etc. You can selectively turn the audio notifications (bleeps and bloops, etc.) for the various events, by clicking the "Settings" icon, in the upper right of any chat room. It looks like 3 small inter-meshing gears. In the box that presents, click the "Notifications" link at the top. Then, under "Sound Notifications" you can select which chat events you want sounds to be issued for. You can also turn off those you do not want to hear.

How can I get notified of events in chat rooms I have joined, when I am not currently in a chat room?

You can have chat notify you when events you select occur in chat rooms you have joined, when you are on the forum, but not currently "in" a chat room (new posts are made, private messages are posted to you, you are mentioned (with the @ symbol, etc.). You can activate or deactivate these various notifications, by clicking the "Settings" icon, in the upper right of any chat room page. It looks like 3 small inter-meshing gears. In the box that presents, click the "Notifications" link at the top. Then, under "Desktop Notifications" you can select which chat events you want to be notified about. You can also turn off those you do not want to receive.

How can I set or remove a status message to my name in the list of room participants?

You can set a status message, indicating that you are on the phone, or briefly away, or just about any message, by posting the following text, using the normal text box:

/status Message text

You can change the message by repeating the post, with a different message. You can clear a posted status message, by simply posting the /status line, with no message text. Know that, once you set a status message, it is persistent, until you change or clear it.

Note that your status will be immediately modified, but may not show until the chat page is automatically refreshed (once every 30 seconds). You can also manually refresh the page at any time, to see status message changes.

Enjoy,
Rich P

How can I tweak the way chat pages work for me?

There are a few ways to tweak chat pages to possibly better suit the way you prefer to work. For example, you can move the post entry box to the top of the page, or invert the direction that the posts shift when new posts are added, of hide certain kinds of message, etc.

You can make these tweaks by clicking the "Settings" icon, in the upper right of any chat room page. It looks like 3 small inter-meshing gears. In the box that presents, click the "Settings" link at the top. Then, under "Miscellaneous" you can select which tweaks to activate or deactivate.

How can we share music with each other, while we chat?

The ability to share music with each other, while chatting makes your time in chat more like being in the room with the folks you are chatting with. To put up music for folks to enjoy, simple go to YouTube, find the page presenting the music you want to share, copy the url of that page. The go into the chat room, click the "Media" icon, just above the post entry box. In the box that presents, and paste the music url into the "Enter media url" field. Also in that box you will see a list of approved media sites. Click continue, and post your chat post with the media link in it.

Once your media link has been posted, chat participants can "play" the media, right in the chat page. Only the one who "plays the media will hear it, so others can be listening to other posted media. Therefore, when you start a media play, it is courteous to post that you are "starting" a particular posted media. That way comments on such can be kept in context.

Enjoy,

How can we get together and chat while we all watch the same live game?

How can we share pictures with each other while we chat?

You can share pictures with each other while chatting. This enhances the conversation in a variety of ways.

If the picture you want to share is posted somewhere, in a linkable manner, you can get that picture to display directly in chat. Simply go to the web page containing the image you want to share, and copy the url of the image. Then, in the chat page, click the "Insert Image" icon, just above the post entry box. In the box that presents, paste the image url into the only field in there. Click, "Insert" then post the post containing the formatted link. The image will present right in the chat page.

You cannot upload pictures directly into chat, so, if the picture is not posted/hosted anywhere, you will have to upload and post it somewhere, like in a post in the forum, or the forum's Media area, or on some hosting site. Then get the url of the image from there and post it in chat as previously described. If you create a dedicated media folder in the Media area, you can use it as needed while chatting. Use of the forum Media area is a subject for a separate instructional thread...

Enjoy,
Rich P
