Is a megger a good way to test a transformer?

I've seen a couple of them for sale recently and wondered if they would be a good test for transformers. Just curious.

For isolation purpose yes. You can test the entire amp or preamp as well.

Indeed, for isolation test it will be good. I use it too, specially for high dc voltage purposes and high ac voltage
purposes.

btw, you can buy at Chinees websites those isolation testers for very low prices.
I checked my isolation testester and the test voltages where accurate.

Yes, but you have to understand what you are doing. You can not test your regular amplifier by using a test voltage of 3000V from your Megger without any knowledge (it will damage your amplifier)

Like many things in life. Most the time you check the system compromised, isolating the rest.
1k IMO will be enough to test a stereo system.

That depends on the tube you will use and the outputpower and transformer you have.
I just made a transformer 10K to 4/9/16 Ohm for a maximum of 24Watts. The AC peak values can be 1400Vpp.
But not many people use 211/845/gm70 or even more exotic tubes.

edit: 24W at 20Hz absolute maximum. At 30Hz a lot more >45W
btw it will be used in a 15W GM70 amplifier
