Paul Joppa doesn't mention near field. These Swans designed for near field are 87 dbs and play as loud as you'd want with a 2.5 watt MW/APPJ.
can you say more about near field? what i'm picking up is that if the listener is closer to the speakers, then the speakers are effectively more efficient. as someone who has recently learned the value in near field listeningm this is interesting for sure.
I think near field is germane to the topic as it allows flea watt SET amps to power less efficient speakers. By near field I mean speakers on tall stands ( around 33+ inches off the floor ) in free space that with an arm extended and a bit of lean you can touch them from the seated position. At ear level and with space behind they would differ from desk top placement. I discovered how much I liked near field with the flea watt powered 85 db Over Night Sensations. I then went on a search for speakers designed for near field and found the Swan kit speakers. FWIW the Swans sound far better in NF than at conventional distances even with more powerful amps. I recently watched a youtube on the more expensive Triangle speakers vs the Swans and the reviewers preferred the Triangles. The problem was they didn't listen to the Swans in NF which would make all the difference in the world. FWIW the kit Swans are currently on Amazon for $239 which is an incredible value as the completed versions fetch a grand.
