Eico HF81 amp build with NOS Eico iron. This is an amazing PP EL84 amp the Jimmy built. around 12-14wpc and it sound amazing. He used NOS Eico iron from his vast stash in this build. Its all the great Eico sound without the integrated controls and such. 4, 8, and 16ohm taps.
From Jim on the build:
“It is a clone of the HF81 minus the preamp sections. The output transformers were new old stock in sealed boxes when I got them. The power transformers on the HF81s were know to overheat and burnout(likely due to shorted power supply from age). Heyboer makes replacements, but the one on this amp I ordered from Heyboer was built with a higher current rating of the B+ winding. The original Eico used EZ81/6CA4 rectifier tubes, the clone was built for damper tubes and 6AX4, 6DM4, 6DA4 can be used and all available NOS in various USA made brands. Also, I added a choke to the power supply and set up the circuit for a bit lower B+ compared to the original possibly longer life of modern EL84s. I kept the hum balance pots as per the original, though those were likely needed only because of the signal voltages of the phono section of the preamp stage. This this amp is basically a power amp so the pots have little or no effect.”

45/46 amplifier build, using transcender iron and vcaps. The Red pearl flake paint does not do this justice down to the vintage red NOS 46 tube sockets. This is an amp I will miss even as I write this ad. I will include sets of amazing 45 and 46 tubes. 2,500.00 shipped.

I see he used dual octal rectifiers on the Eico HF81 clone instead of the dual 6CA4s - are they 6V rectifiers or did he add a dedicated 5V transformer?

They are 6ax4's.
Interesting - I wonder why they were chosen, especially given that two 6AX4's have about 60% of the B+ current capability - I'm assuming it had something to do with their related 60% current draw against the PT.

I do like the layout - very reminiscent of the Fisher SA16, but not so cramped.

Charles - do you have any more pictures of the HF-81. Also, can you remind us where you're located. I'm in the SF bay area. Are you close enough for me to take a look at these?

I am always amazed and impressed with the caliber of gear that flows through your room bud! While not my bag, that Red amp is down right sexy and I would totally be fine with spending an afternoon or two with it. GLWTS!

What’s the power output on the 45/46? I’ve been looking for a tube amp to try with my 604s and that red would fit in here quite nicely.
Typically between 1-2watts. I ran 45s with 604s and, like others, enjoyed it. They're definitely got a sense of gooeyness and compression. Very sweet. If you're thinking about taking the plunge, these amps look lovely
