Listening Room Dilemma

I've got a few bucks to burn. Pondering the idea of building a standalone listening room/hobby room. From my research 17x27x10 seems to be ideal. I'll add 10' to the width so I can have a spot to store my motorcycles and my wife has her own space also. This way I won't clutter up the house with all my audio stuff as my wife calls it. Something else I've wondered about is as much as I listen to music this could be a bad idea staying holed up in the 'hobby' room. And the bigger issue is, I'm 65 and could kick the bucket in the next few years. Cost approx. $75K. What would you do?

Well executed, I don't believe there is any other single thing that will make things sound better. If you can afford it, I say go for it, too.

You raise some good points. Much as I'd love a similar space I would be a bit leery of taking all of my listening out of the house in as a whole and into isolation if it truly would run that way. Apart from that I'd say "go for it". If I had the room to and funds to build something like that I'd do it for sure, though it would probably end up doubling as a piano workshop to some degree. Yeah, I need one of those.

As it stands now I listen alone 90% of the time because my wife still enjoys her job. More upgrades on equipment doesn't make too much sense as I can't mod the room I'm (we) using without a fight and I don't want to go there. She's put's up with enough as it is.

If you can make it a hobby room that you can both do what you love at the same time. You have my yes! For extra credit you have to pass the Dave Ramsey criteria too, which sounds like you do.

It's your money, however, I've found that having my system in the living room has led to my wife and I both enjoying music and introducing each other to new artists.

Suppose I could keep a simple system in the house that she can operate by a flick of a button. As it is now you have to first turn on the phono pre, then the pre amp, then the power amps. She may keep working for another 6-7 years, who knows. when she brings work home i'll know shes getting close to pullin' the pin.

Having an easy to operate system in a place where it can be mutually enjoyed is always a good idea as far as I'm concerned. We have a system in our loft bedroom that gets a lot of play time and the ones in the living room and kitchen as well.

We do travel. Alot. At least 4 trips a year. We like Central America and Hawaii. Not to leave out the US. Bought a new car just for road trips. That's all it's used for. My wife travels more than I do. No European vacations for me, to far. she goes there by herself or with a group. Headed to Nicaragua in Jan. & Molokai in March.

Then a music room would be a great addition. I do like the idea of making it a bit of a retreat for both of you so that you don’t end up an audio hermit. And it frees up the rest of the house to be enjoyable for other things. Or you could buy a used BMW M3.

A used M3. Gave up on cool cars long ago. I get enough tickets in what I have now and my track days are on 2 wheels.. We have a 3.5 mile dirt driveway that eats cars.
