My horns are STILL held up in shipping but I can’t wait to join you! Those look awesome!!

so sorry to hear that! every LP i've bought from international sellers since lockdown has been a bit of an adventure...thankfully all have *eventually* arrived! best of luck to ya!

I noticed the Audionote setup on the second pic, did this better the shindo gear? Or is it a case of a different tool for a different job?

i'd hesitate ever saying 'better' when comparing A/N & shindo- i'm a massive fan of both companies but felt the 211 tube on the audio note amp would be a nice place to start when dialing these guys in since i've had a handful of experience w/ this tube on big speakers in big rooms. next stops will be 300b and 2a3 experiments!
had a killer night of mono playback via my miyajima zero last night (a cartridge that never ceases to amaze me!)...see pic...my earlier comment about searching for more 'up top' isn't as applicable when listening to these 'real people in real rooms' mono recordings. BUT, i still want to look into adding a super tweeter to get a bit more action on the more 'stereo/studio' recordings.
the great joe roberts is trying to talk me out of it over email right now- ha! i totally get where he's coming from on trying to stay 2-way but at this point, i have to at least give 'em a try or else i wont stop thinking about the 'what if's' while i should be focusing on the music!
speaking of- anyone have a pair of super tweeters that would compliment these horns for sale??

I like the Fostex bullet tweeters for this -- I used to own a nice pair of Fostex T90As, which are their mid-priced offering in that line. Otherwise, you might try to find a pair of the notoriously fragile Altec 3000 horn tweeters... even Joe couldn't object too much to those! :)

if anyone cares- pete gave me some crossover-dialing tips and i went into tweaker mode last night messing with positioning (cabinet & horn sled placement + horn angle) and xo settings....i THINK i found what i'd been searching for and might have jumped the gun on the super tweeter idea. don't get me wrong- these have sounded absolutely incredible since the moment i wired them up- i'm just out here with a magnifying glass trying to lock in the last little details! (hoping this phase ends soon so i can just get back to the music!)

Nice! Dialing in horns can be tricky but it's so worth the effort. Fractions of an inch can make a surprisingly big difference in the soundstage.

How I would like to be a fly on the wall! Actually, preferably a fly in the sweet spot.:)
Enjoy in good health.

all those ones in the pic are all pretty good...heh heh
I'm sure they are. If you're open to visitors once the current situation improves, I'd love to hear what you've put together. I'm in Northern California but occasionally pop down to the LA area to visit relatives.

things are getting reallllly good over here after an invaluable phone call w/ joe roberts who offered up some major tips on how to get these horns to sing.
big shouts to @djnagle for hooking me up with the altec horn brackets...can't imagine how tough it would have been to dial these in so well using the home depot frankenstein equivalent that i'd worked up.

Pete is the reason I finally caved and drove 12 hours roundtrip to find a pair of Valencias. I had this dumb preconceived notion of what Altecs would sound like....wrong, wrong, wrong. First cut Pete played me was Johnny Cash and I knew in an instant I would own a pair.
Slightly off topic: last time I was in Palm Springs, Matt and I couldn't hook up so my gf and I drove to LA to go to your place (and pick up some Blue Star doughnuts). Very cool but I left thinking wouldn't that awesome with Shindo and Altec! Those Khorns sounded great.

Hey Zach. Sweet system. I think you know my good friend Rafe. I am loving your Altecs. How would you compare the Valencia’s and your new VOT to your old 604’s?
