LP recommendations

Happy Saturday, everyone! I recently had my Thorens TD 124 refurbished by Greg Metz, and wow what a difference! I’ve always enjoyed records more than streaming or any other source, but since getting the turntable back from Greg, I’ve enjoyed my records more than ever.

My gear is fairly well sorted at this point, and unless we were to move or I move my system to a different room, which would allow for different speakers, I don’t see any new purchases coming my way. That said, I am on the hunt for new records!

I would like to discover new artists and small labels, such as our Jerome Sabbagh. My taste vary greatly, but I find myself listening to jazz, classical, indie rock, bluegrass, and folk more than anything else these days. Any recommendations out there? I am listening to Jerome right now.

+1

That album was Soundscape's* go-to for demoing the then fairly new Polk Audio Monitor 7 and 10.

Worked on me! I have a flashbulb memory of hearing the album on the Polks.

Bought a demo pair of Monitor 7A as soon as I scraped together the $, and bought the album at more or less the same time.
Still have the loudspeakers & the album.

Algorithm recently turned me on to these guys - The Dead South. Interesting name for lads from Regina, Saskatchewan. Folk-Bluegrass genre.
This album won the Juno award for Roots album of the year in 2020.

If you haven't yet, you should definitely look into just about anything done by/with Jerry Douglas, Allison Kraus and Union Station. Earl Scruggs of course. Dan Tyminski and Jerry Douglas colaborate.

Yeah, I picked a few nice LPs from a friend back in the spring and passed on these for some Tony Rice. Seems like I need to make a visit to his house again soon!

I forgot to add Béla Fleck and either of the major bands he's been associated in: New Grass Revival & The Flecktones. I haven't heard any of his music from before joining NGR, so can't comment about it. But New Grass Revival and the Flecktones are both superb groups, and he has a bunch of great solo stuff as well. There's a lot of music to listen to from him. Also his wife, Abigail Washburn, is an excellent banjo player, but I don't have any of her recordings. One caveat: it may be hard to source lp's.
