Model 19 horn options

Has anyone seen or done a different horn in a model 19? Worthwhile consideration? Maybe an Emilar in place of the 811?
I'm off to do a search.

Search at AA and you'll likely find this (i.e., I did) -- and my hunch is that Tom Brennan is correct.

Do you have the foam around the horn?
have the crossovers been re-capped? I would start there if they sound harsh to you. Maybe some of the Russian PIO caps to smooth things put a little.
The other thing is that I think many people run the horns too hot. It sounds nice and detailed until it gets annoying/ fatiguing.

One of the posters on the AA thread made this comment: "Emilar bowties are nice and very inert castings - they need to be on a baffle, otherwise can sound a bit thin on their bottom due to the narrow mouth height dimension in their center."

That is consistent with my experience with horns similar to the Emilar. They need to be on a baffle. If a horn is mounted in free air, it tends to sound thin and lean; it also does not blend as coherently with the woofer.

Thanks for that link MHArdy.

I have the one set of 19's that Marantzfan originally restored and I ended up with after the guy he sold them to kinda beat them up. I've put everything back together other than doing anything to the cabinets. I also have all the parts other than the Lpad controls to populate another set. I picked up a cleaner set of Walnut cabinets that I will use so in that effort I either just make one great set, or I tinker around a little first with something like this. I have Emilar bowties already so that was the direction I had hoped showed the most promise based on others efforts and experiences. Might be a fun experiment since I have the spare cabs. Or I just build the 2nd set and sell them to one of you guys for a nice profit!

I agree on horns needing to be in baffles. I have come to the same conclusion. The 811 in my current 19's are fine....but they are still 811's. I do have the correct foams surrounding them too fortunately.

While you would have to mount on top of the cabinet (unless you got creative), you could always try a 32c horn and see if that smooths things out.

Use the good cabinets to make a perfect factory set. Then use the beat up cabinets to experiment with. You are in a unique situation. You have both pair at once to do side by side comparisons. Are the crossovers factory? Have you looked at the Z-19 crossover?

I think I will limit the experiment to only something that could be mounted where the original horn was. I'd rather do something else with the 32's.
I guess once you mess with the 811 horn, the 19 is just another bass cabinet with a 416 in it.

The current full set have the Z19. Plus I have the originals that could be recapped for now. Marantzfan did the Z19. All I need are the front panel controls.

The "32" family of horns are awfully nice sounding, too. Mind you, I am just saying.

;)

Absolutely! But honestly the 19 cabinets will not allow the 32 to sound its best. The 32 needs a flat baffle without a lot of protruding cabinet edges.
